Hard to start when warmed up

1988 150 blk max<br /> The moter was just tuned up in April. I put about 30 hrs on it since then. The moter starts right ut runs great. The problem is when I try to start it after fishing for a half hour or so it is hard to start. I have to push the throttle up to start it. I don't think this is normal.<br /> Thanks, Dead Eye

This happens on my 1980 50hp and I think it's "Human error". Depending on whether the motor has fully cooled, you either use the choke and turn the key, squeeze the bulb and turn the key, push the fast idle up, squeeze the bulb and turn the key...or any of the above.. I usually flood it.. by making the wrong choice. It's a common problem which will improve as we get to know our motor and whether conditions better. I'll bet it never happens to JB as he has been around OB's for ever.

The motor idles around 800rpms. Purrs like a kitten . The only problem is starting right up when warm. If I push the fast idle up it starts right up. It idles fine after I get it started.<br /> Thanks , Dead Eye

Dead Eye, are you tilting the engine out of the water while fishing?<br />Just asking...

I guess I should have also asked. After you finally get it started (after fishing for a half hour), can you turn it off and immediately restart it with no choke or fast idle position on the throttle?

KCLOST<br /><br />That is a good point... and supports my "Human error" theory. When my motor has been run and then brought to a halt and shut off, it will start with less than 1 crank.. EVERY time, so there is really no problem, The problem is ME.<br />Would be interesting to see what Deadeye says.

As Unicorn saya It will start right up if i shut it off after a run. My problem is when I sit and drift for a half hr. or so it is tough to start, I do not lift the motor while i am foshing. <br /> Thanks, Dead Eye

with the motor cooling for a 1/2 hr... I would expect to have to fast idle the motor & choke it... a warm motor to me would be 5-10 min....

Ok, at least we know it's not a motor/carb problem then....<br /><br />You may have gas draining from the line back into the tank... An easy thing to do is to buy a new fuel line with a new primer bulb. I think it has a check valve in it somewhere. Maybe yours is going bad...<br />The reason why I suggest this is because I can fish for an hour or so and it will fire immediately...<br />After you fish for a half hour or more, try squeezing the primer bulb.. If it is real soft and takes several squeezes to get firm (more that a couple), I would expect that you need a new one.
