so I am in the process of replacing the 165 hp omc in my boat.

I found a used motor in good shape... for the most partl LOL

Good news. Good compression. opened her up and resealed top to bottom. it had been sitting so the seals looked bad. So now is the time. did the rear main and the bearings look excellent. it's nice and clean on the inside... so I am happy.

Semi bad news...

Got it back together and went to put the balancer on.. the balancer on the "new" motor has a nice groove in it... no biggie speedy sleeve. BUT about 1/3 or the rubber looks kind of bad.

So I pull the balancer off my old motor... Looks like the outter ring is about 1/2" slid forward.... And the timing marks don't match up with the other one (my guess it has spun about 1/4 turn) . SO I am sure it's no good. also it is hard to turn the motor without the balancer to find TDC.. to proove which balancer has the correct Timing marks on it.

I figure my choices are.... use the one that came with the "new" motor with a speedy sleeve...

or 2 Get another balancer.... If I decide to get a new balancer (her comes the question) are they all the same? or are they different year to year? Because I have NO idea what year the "NEW" motor is... although it is EXACTLY the same as far as I can see to the old motor.

I see there are two different spacing for the v-belt grooves. 1/4" and 1/2" I have the 1/4" on both.. but are there other differences?

Ok second Question. The "New" motor had a couple spark plugs that were broken, from being moved around... no bigge. so I pull the plugs out of the "old" motor (they have only a few hours on them) and they are different.

the "new" motors plugs the electrode barely sticks out.. (really cold plugs... autolite 28's I believe) the plugs that were in my "old" motor I think are AC R45 T's the electrodes stick out atleast 1/8" more.. (really hot plugs)

Since I dont have the balancer on I can;t really turn the motor to see if clearance is going to be a problem.. but I doubt it.. BUT I am worried about the heat range of the plugs....

Any suggestions on a plug I should run? I figure running a cooler plug would cause LESS problems than running a hotter plug... but I want to run what SHOULD be in the motor.... if I knew exactly what motor is is.. if they are all the same I guess I am good to go.. Just stick with what the "old" motor should take.

Extra info...

The "new" motor is all black and has a mercruiser logo on the Valve cover.. IT HAS BEEN REBUILT at one time (all the rod and main caps are marked 1 through 6 and it has an overheat tag on the head)

the OLD motor is a 73 165 hp OMC in a 73 arrowglass... I am certain it is all original.

Sorry for the "BOOK" and thanks for any input!

Wow this is the first time I have not had ANY response...

Here are a couple pics the blue one is the OLD balancer you can see the outter ring has slid forward quite a bit..

the black on is from the NEW motor the spot I show is where the rubber is "worn" a bit

I would not use the one that has slipped. I would not be afraid to use the black one. The condition of the rubber is not unusual for its age. Just keep an eye on it. You dont need it to slide into the cover.

I'd use the black one,,,unless you want to spend $75-100 for a new one.

So where did you end up find the new engine?

I agree there was NO WAY I was using the blue one. The black on I was not 100% sure about. the picture makes it look a little better than it is..

I was thinking about a new one. and that is how much I found them for. but I was NOT sure if their was More than one I could buy and be WRONG.. I may still buy one but
since it is REALLY easy to get to, For now I think I will throw the black one back on the motor.. And kee an Eye on her. More because I want to get her back in the water.. don't ant to wait for a new balancer.... I quote george Clooney in O' Brother where art thou... "Well isn't this a geographical odity.... two weeks from everywhere..."

Yeah the New motor had a couple rubber freeze plugs in it... they looked good but I wanted to put brass ones in so they were right (especially since they were underr the manifold) took me over a week to get the right ones here (they had one in stock needed two) and when I did the wheel berrings on my trailer.... that was a nightmare. I gave them Part numbers and it still took 3 tries to get the right ones..(races and seal were wrong every time, until they got the EXACT numbers I gave them) that whole deal took about a week and a half too.

I found the engine at a marine place in henderson the guys name is Wes can't think of the name of the shop. But if you drive down main in henderson, turn up the hill at the taco bell, he is near the top of the hill... looks like the place has been there a LONG time...

. its in Pretty awesome shape considering I paid $350.00 for it.. and it had everything on it bellhousing to front motor mount. including carb manifold exhaust elbow alternator starter distribitor etc etc etc... I got LOTS of spare parts now if I ever need them!

Thanks for the input... any suggestions on the plugs? or should I just go get the proper plug for the "OLD" motor and if they are the short ones I am good to go... if they are the longer ones.... just check them out really well before I crank it over with them in the motor?

Thanks again.. Great guys here.

Wholly smokes, $350 from a boat shop for a complete 165, they must have had it sitting around there for a loooong time.

I'm not sure what the correct plug is for your new engine, depends if the plugs are gasket seal or taper seal. I'd go with AC's or what ever NGK crosses over to it. Here's NGK's plug selector. Oh yeah, if that's a Mercruiser engine you got, the serial number tag should be above the starter, on the skirt.

Yep it had been sitting, That why the reseal all the gaskets were dried out. But compression is good. so I was happy to take it!

Both motors have the tappered seal plugs. it's just the legnth I am wondering about. I'd hate to run to hot a plug and burn up a piston or something.

THanks for the input Dan.. sure helps out. when I get this baby wet again maybe we can meet up at lake mead or something...

Take care. I'll update when shes running. I have some time this weekend to get the drive moved over.. then it's drop it in and run her!!
