Has anyone ever had a harmonic balancer mismatched with a motor? And any idea what the outcome would be?

yep
and it ranges from bad vibration to broken crankshafts.
a mismatched flywheel will have the same effect

No.

A mismatch will not last long. Just think you spin the crank 3000 times every sixty seconds on average. The tiniest bit out and things will fly apart quick.
Now if you are using say a Chevy 350 balancer and putting it on a 350 as long as you get the right year grouping there shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Harmonic balancer..

Anita, I don't think that the harmonic balancer is causing your loss of top end. How do you know if the balancer is incorrect? A small block Chevy engine is internally balanced and the flywheel and balancer are neutrally balanced. As far as I know the only small block with external balance is the 400 cu.in. It has what I refer to as a front and rear 'flywheel'.

Unless of course you have a Ford motor but you didn't bother to give that little detail.

Boom makes a good point but after doing a search, it would seem that Anita has a 350 AND timing issues.

Which brings us back to the front pulley - the timing marks could be wrong - possibly the wrong pulley.

Re: Harmonic balancer..

Believe me we have gone round the block a million times...

We replaced the distributor and low and behold think we may be off by 180.. Motor ran like a champ just still lacking on the top end..
SOOOOOOO we are flipping that darn thing tonight to see what happens.
Ran it on sunday.. starts idles runs well. Just will not get over 3800 rpm.. any marine motor should be able to get up 4200-4800+ We are just missing something STUPID here. Its got the power we put a 21 Mirage SS and swings it just fine.

Yes Chev 350merc.... The orig motor was a rebuilt 350mec we detonated a piston. Big ole hole on top.. Turns out we really think it was timed way wrong distributor was bad.. Thus detonated. Marine mech we knew said.. now way he had never seen it happen.. of course our luck.. Indeed it was.
This has been a nightmare........
As always everybody on this board is awesome...
Nice 1995 2502 Genesis Cabin boat for sales by owner.. Brand new 350merc that is supposed to be starting out 330hp.. With fancy new Edelbrock performa intake. etc...
Wish us luck and SANITY...

Re: Harmonic balancer..

Anita, It sounds to me like you may just be over propped. Over propping will also detonate a piston in a short time if you run a lot of wot.

By the way, where do you run in Illinois?? You are only the second or third person on the site I have seen from IL.

Re: Harmonic balancer..

I rebuilt a motor one time and it ran like yours "starts idles runs well. Just will not get over 3800 rpm". Tried a carb swap, distributor swap and anything else I could think of. I told a buddy about it and he said "timing chain is off" just as quick as I finished speaking. I thought "B S" but I had run out of options. Took the motor apart and it was out by a tooth. I credit that one to, to many beers.

Re: Harmonic balancer..

We are also in the grand muddy chain o lakes.
On the over prop.. I would have gone along with that, except we tried 3 different props and never ran over 5000RPM. We found once the old distributor timing was all over the place. It would jump around from 8-10-12-14-and start all over. New distributor holds as it should.

We hang at the north end of Fox Lake normally. If you see 6-18) (8ft-32ft) boatload of boats rafted up togther that is normally us.
We were the goofs with weber grills on stakes pounded into the sand knee deep on the 4th of july.
Thanks "screen name" after this your thought is our next place to look.
When you did get it back on the right tooth what did you get out of the motor?
As hosed up as it is now, were at 3800-+ rpm at about 44ish mph...

19' Larson / Velero Sport with a Mercruiser 888 Power plant = Ford 351 Winsor with a mercruiser 888 outdrive (think it was a model "O").
19 pitch aluminum prop / 4800rpm's WOT at close to 53mph

Re: Harmonic balancer..

What props did you try,.?? What were the #s in those test runs,..????

It looks to Me that you're pushing a pretty Big boat,..... 21"s Might be Too Much,.....

If this is a Brand New Merc. 350, 330hp,..?? How Much of your old engine are you using,.??
You aren't going to see 330hp without the Full Package.....And where'd you find this 330hp motor,.??

I'd think a 17" or 19" prop would probably give you All the mph that motors got........

f in,.... I Like the new pic of the boat.... ;)
