hello I need a little help. I was given a 1987 88 spl by a friend who was told it was too bad off to repair by a dealer. He tried to sell him a new motor, but the guy found amercury 80 hp cheap and bought it and had this dealer switch the motors.

the dealer charged $575, but i think he really wanted the boat sale and might have even thought he was going to keep the take off.

but my buddy promissed it to me for all the help i have been giving him.

the controls on the pontoon boat were the newer style bimini..black , wide, with the key at an angle. it has three pig tail connectors hanging under it to connect up to the motor harness.

I have the same control that came with my 1997 evinrude.

now the motor has a big red connector plug to hook up inside the cover.

the pieces between the two is missing. which is the long run from the red plug to the controls..

the dealer says he threw it away.( it has been a week only!!)

he is p.o'd he didnt get to keep the motor I think..

now i have a 1988 70 hp and I can see the harness on that motor and its control box is different.. and the harness runs right into the control box.

doesnt seem to have those individual connectors... and on the other end is that big red connector.

so I THINK...this boat /motor combo has a special harness or a spliced harness to allow the motor harness to hook up to a newer control

any one ever hear of that?

the dealer says , he will just look up in his storage area for one that will fit...but I think he may come back with a harness that isnt compatible on BOTH ends!!

The dealer told my buddy the motor had bad compression in one cylinder...but written on the cylinder heads are compression numbers, 115, 115, 115, 120....

and the TNT that was bad is only a broken wire under the control box!!!

I wanted the motor, because it drove nice and ran...but the TNT would not work

the dealer told him the whole motor is bad

I want to start the motor again on the stand...but need that harness

can i jump start the motor?? and have it run??? or do I need all the wires hooked up just to run it??

Re: harness help question

this is what you need, red plug fits motor, other end fits the new control cables.

you can jump the incoming positive post on solenoid, to yellow/red tracer small post, this will activate the starter. you will have to flood the motor, primer solenoid red handle, or pull plug wires to shut it down.

that 88 is one great motor, a real work horse.
