I have a 1995 mercury 40 that will not start at times. The problem is in the wiring harness on the side of the motor. With someone moving the harness it will start. Is this a common problem? And is there a easier fix than to replace the whole harness? Any info would be appreciated. Kit

Re: Harness problem

Check each wire and its connection very closely. There is either a loose connection or a corroded connection. Disconnect the big harness plug, check it for corrosion, clean it and reconnect it. Check also for pinched or damaged wires and bare wires leaning against the engine parts.

Re: Harness problem

Unplug the harness and disconnect the battery cables from the battery. Clean the plug on the harness with baking soda and water and do the same with the plug on the motor. Dry thoroughly and hook everything back up. See if this fixes the problem. If not you may have broken wires. If the wires are broken they can be soldered and insulated with heat shrink.
