I've getting over a few bites right now, and have been bitten many times over the years. One time, in Kansas after a fishing trip, I had a memorable case with hundreds of bites. Never put those old chigger medicines on your privates....yikes!

I never have actually seen one of the miserable things, and people from some parts of the country don't even know what you are talking about.

Many mistake those little red spider mites for chiggers, but they are harmless.

After years of scratching, I wouldn't know one if it jumped at me waving a baton.

Jinx

You can also put clear fingernail polish or super glue over it too. At least that's what I've always been told.

Ummm, I think the lighter fluid and ice pick are for the crabs, as in "Buster the Body Crab", isn't it?

just wipe your legs down with diesel or kerosene and no chigger problems....of course you smell real purty then!

that's what my grandfather would do to us as kids on the farm..

visited my In-Laws in Kansas (lake Melvern) and got the worst biting ever (should have used the diesel)

Walleyehed ,
That was the first site that came up , doing a Google search!. As a kid , I had a few run-in's with those little biters, and I too , never saw one in real life. Until that 'kids' site.

Interesting to note that they are from the spider family.....

I'd never been to a kids site before. Very informative indeed.

Seriously I need to get a life, first I get hooked into TROLL thread and now I'm reading on a kiddie site about of all things Chiggers!

Was fun though. Good post

Re: Has anyone actually seen a real, live chigger?

I live in California and I don't think we have chiggers. A few years back I contracted mange mites from my dogs. I think they are basically the same thing as a chigger. The vet said they burrow under the skin and lay eggs. He said they are fairly easy for humans to get rid of.
After being sickened at the thought of having them I bought some powerful mange mite dog dip that can only be purchased at a vetenarians office.
I went home and got in the shower and scrubed myself with the dip and a brush. I think I killed a few million brain cells and got loaded in the process because the stuff was strong.
I thought for sure the stuff would rid me of them but after couple days and scratching myself raw I realized the stuff didn't work.
I talked to a friend of mine that worked at a feed store and he told me about a medicine that ranchers use in cattle and swine that killed parasites called Ivomec.
I bought a bottle for $40 and went home and administered it to myself and the dogs.
The dogs recieved a shot but I took my dosage in a cup of pepsi.
By the next day I was feeling as good as new.
Now anytime the dogs scratch or they need to be wormed I give them a shot of this stuff.
