Do you have a floatation suit to go with that auger?

Oh yeah here in MN last weekend the wheelers, sleds and ice houses were out on our lake. It was uncomfortable being on the lake even walking along the shore 20 feet out trying to wrap my head around the fact it was November and the ice was as thick as it was. There is now 20 inches of snow and presume there will be a lot more people versus last weekend when there was maybe a quarter inch of snow.

Not long for me now, high temps this week highs 20 lows 10 and a nice wind to thicken it up. Just have to start off with the smaller lakes and give the big ones some extra time. Pan fish, trout, whitefish and burbot. Wish the big lake here that has walleye in it would freeze up tight.

They're pullin' fish up through the ice over at the Ice Shanty site.

What is this "ice" you speak of? We know it not in my land, for it is warm and sunny the year round. This week alone gods have blessed us with highs in the low 80s. We must be worthy indeed. Perhaps, you have offended your Northern Sky lords? :p

Ha Ha, as much as you feel for us...we feel for you that you don't have such variation in seasons and activities. That is until about 65 years old or so and then finally get on board. Snowmobiling yesterday first time of the season was tons of fun. I can take about 3 months of boating and I'm bored of it.

I secretly agree with you (shh..) I'm in the tippy top of the state and 80s in December is pretty wacky. The biggest fear is that the trees and azaleas will start to bud and bloom early then a cold snap will get them :/ It was super cold last year, so maybe this is the do over or something. Either way a bit of cool would be nice for Xmas. Of course this isn't bad either......

+1 ;) I honestly don't understand why people would choose to live in the cold either. I gave it a fair shot by living in the Appalachian mountains for a few years, but by the third winter, I was dunzo. Plus, I'm pretty sure that's where alcoholism was invented....seriously. Then again what else are you gonna do when it cold, dark and wet 8 months out of the year? It all seemed so unnecessary to me, but I guess they didn't know any better. Although, in fairness, the mountains are one of the few places where the Floridians are the tourists (aka "Floridiots"). The flatlanders were always in for a shock when they tried to start driving in the mountains, in winter, on snow. It wouldn't have been so bad were it not for fear of falling off the side of a mountain at all times :/

I can think of other things, but there may be consequences and involve another willing participant. Opposite genders required-IMHO.

Having traveled the country extensively for many years I can only speak for Minnesota. Our standard of living is high relative to other places and the cold comes along with it. Of course the endless number of lakes and boating opportunities helps. We have several downsides however that are getting harder and harder bear.

I don't think there is ANYTHING safe in the Detroit Metro area. Let alone the ice.

Just kidding. I'm from up there. Saginaw area.

i was out on sunday. the st lawrence river is not yet solid. i fished in a small river feeding the st lawrence. i think the main river was frozen but the coast guard broke it up. the main shipping channel remains open during the winter. when those big lake freighters pass buy you can hear and feel the ice move. i caught a few perch and one pike. i didnt get out early enough for the walleye. its supposed to be very cold here starting wednesday should be good for the middle of next week.

Re: has anyone got out on the ice yet?

There are a few places around here that should be getting around to having some safe ice. I even heard rumor yesterday at work of people being on the ice in a place called Hyrum last weekend.
I do have to admit that some of you all that don't get the freeze have it pretty good sometimes. But I do enjoy the ice fishing season we have here. It's just relaxing in a different kind of way if you're set up alright.
We have a good hot summer around here too though. The problem is that it sometimes goes from the 100s to the 70s in about a weeks time, and then a few weeks later we're below freezing and it's dumping snow on us. Then, in what we have lately for a spring season, it does just the opposite and suddenly all of that mountain snowpack melts really fast and tries to flood us. It doesn't always happen like that but it seems that you can almost count on it lately.
