Has anyone seen a rig like this?

Owned my boat for six years but still a newbie to towing rigs

Check the pics - is this style of hinged tongue a common setup or is it a custom made thing?

and what is the hinge for any way?

Does attaching the axles to the top of the leaf springs make a difference or is it a common thing?

looks pretty common from what I can tell, all the springs I have seen are mounted that way, the pivot for the tongue, looks like it is a tilt trailer for launching in shallow water, also easier launching, if want to mess with it.

Lifting a trailer by mounting the springs on top of the axles is pretty common here in Colorado, it helps with primitive launching, gets the boat above the rocks and things when launching from shore instead of a ramp. Tilt trailers are also a plus in the same situation (primitive launches) although I have never seen the need for tilt trailers I know people that swear by them.

Interesting axles, looks like maybe the axles were below the springs at some point in time (dual spring perches). or maybe the axle maker did that for to fit twice as many applications.
And I do not recall seeing grease fittings on the equilizer pivots either.
I think the safety chains are puny, lol.
