Has anyone tried Hurculiner on an aluminum boat?

I have a 1976 13 ft Duranautic aluminum boat. The paint on the deck is worn with some areas of shiny aluminum showing. I am considering using some dark grey Hurculiner bed lining to redo the deck of this boat. Just wondering if anyone has tried this and what were the results and any application tips. Thanks.

Yes people have used it but I would not reccommend it. Use the search function and look up bedliner.

Aluminum is sometimes funny with adhesion, some paints stick well some peel right off. I would check first to make sure it sticks good, call or look up their documentation. Might need to prime it first then.

Re: Has anyone tried Hurculiner on an aluminum boat?

I used a spray-on 3M bedliner on my 12' aluminum boat and I have not been very happy with the way it has been working out.

It stays dirty all the time and is difficult to clean. Did not adhere enough to avoid having it scraped off by the battery etc while towing. Makes it impossible for me to rebuck the rivets and apply gluvit, which I should have done prior, without using a wire wheel to remove the bedliner(pre-iboats work I had done).

If I could do it all over again I would have used gluvit and then painted maybe even left it bare aluminum since I have built decking to stand on.

Thanks for all the advice. I have seen some boats fitted with removable decking here on iboats. I am leaning toward building the same for my boat. After priming I painted the exterior with roll on rustoleum with great results. If all else fails I can do the same for the deck. I sure would hate to have to scrape off a bad hurculiner job.

Take a look at my restoration thread if you want an idea for removable decking. I have been pretty happy with the results since I've been fishing and testing ideas throughout my project. Link is below.

In my opinion, the biggest problem with spray in bed liners is the fact that any future repairs would be a real mess. There's nothing like a good coat of Gluvit, some good paint and a fresh deck over the aluminum, even if it's just a few sections of plywood.

A neighbor did do his duck boat with an aluminum floor over a Gluvit treated hull, it worked out great but he ended up coating the aluminum with deck paint and sand for traction after finding the bare painted aluminum was slippery and hot.
