Hatch Supports or Gas Springs?

I own a 1991 Seasprite Cuddy and had to rebuild practically everything with wood in it when I got her. We are on our last phase, the hatch cover, and back seat are built and ready to install. I have been trying to figure out what to use to hold up the engine hatch cover and would greatly appreciate the input of the expert restorers here.

The engine box as originally built was basically a 5'x3' solid piece, with a hinged backrest and a bench seat. Apparently (and I say this because it was half disintegrated, the hatch cover/back rest could be lifted and closed as one unit, which is nice in that there is ample room to reach the engine compartment. We decided to follow the same method. It appeared there were 2 gas shocks that held the weight and regulated the ascent/descent on the cover. I have no idea what size they were since all that was there originally were the 2 mounting brackets.

In any case, the hatch cover we fabricated is a glassed piece of 3/4" roughly 5x3, which isn't light. If we stick to the original design and attach the headboard for the bench seat, it's going to get even heavier. We can go another route and bracket the headboard to the bench if necassary with a few minor changes.

So I am wondering if we should go with the gas type shocks, like http://www.iboats.com/Attwood_Sprin...94542921--**********.629931726--view_id.38311 , and if so, which size is recommended. Or, could we use something like this http://www.iboats.com/Perko_Hatch_S...94542921--**********.629931726--view_id.20209 , which are elbow brackets. Or, does anyone have another suggestion?

Thanks in advance, I appreciate the quality input I have seen on this board lurking!

Re: Hatch Supports or Gas Springs?

The Perco Hatch supports are probably not strong enough to hold the engine cover securely. They are really designed for much smaller hatches and windows.

The gas struts are what you need. They have the lifting power for the cover, especially if its made from 3/4" ply and glass.

You will need to figure out how much force is needed to lift the cover at the point where the strut connects to the cover, not the edge where you would lift it. The lbs of force you choose will determine if it just makes the cover easy to lift, or lift by itself when the latch is released.

You will probably find more info on how to determine which strut you need at the ATTWOOD website. attwoodmarine.com I bet if you call them and talk to tech support, they can tell you which strut is right for your application. They have been very friendly when I called and asked about their products.

Re: Hatch Supports or Gas Springs?

I used a pair of old trim cylinders to make a power lift system on my buddies boat a few years back, I took an old Merc outboard trim pump, a switch and relay and two rams and made the engine hatch hydraulic powered. It worked great and since it opened clam shell style rearward, It made for a wide open work area to get to the engines. It came with gas struts but they only lasted a season or two. The new set up will no doubt last much longer.
It added about 30 lbs of weight but it sure is nice to be able to just push a button to open the engine compartment. He opens it to vent the compartment on start up as well, we installed two huge evac fans as well.

Now it must be cool to watch the hatch open! Great stuff. I was going to mention linear actuators and didn't, but now that you brought that up, its a good alternative to hydraulics.

Re: Hatch Supports or Gas Springs?

On the same subject, I contacted Attwood Spring & they referred me to this forum. I have a heavy engine hatch & use 2 -20" gas lift cylinders. They work perfectly, however the spring clips on the end of the cyln. do not last long & I'm tired of replacing the good clyinder w/a new one @ $29.00 each. Attwood is not interested in selling me the hold down clips, they are in the lift buisness.
Does anyone know where I can find just the clips ??? Thanks Halinkall
