Stay away from your brother in law neighbor "mechanic". You'll get a lot better info right on here.

Is this in the water or on the trailer? I would check the mechanical advance timer base and timing first, followed by a good sync/link. Before BIL(L) touches it make sure your working on a good motor. Their is no magic to these ignition system except for their simplicity.

As stated, there are many simple things that it could be before you go buying a new stator. Ill assume you do not have a service manual? That would be my first investment. Go to outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint, or ebay for a used version. Get a factory OEM Service Manual, not a Clymers or Seloc, especially for Linc n Sync procedures. This mechanic is trying to say that both stators bit the bullet at the same time? Highly unlikely Id imagine.

I would follow Jeffersons advice first, after you buy a manual.
