Re: Have a little delima

Man talk about bayliner bashers!!!!! give me a break!

Oh boy, now ya did it.

You did ask for 'opinions'....you got them.

I was going to leave this thread alone because I don't really 'get' what you are after. Seems like you are jumping at 'deals' and now are trying to figure out how to convert the negatives into positives.

You're not diggin' the solutions presented....don't blame you...

Um, yup!

You are talking "1987 Bayliner", "OMC".....and...."profit"....the opinions you got were about making money off of this situation and they don't usually belong in the same sentence.

Too many what if's in the senario.

Sell the Bayliner for whatever you can get. That will let you know how much "profit" you have to work with.

With that info, you can decide if you should repair the 1972.
IMO, not worth the hassle, time, and money to repair it, for the possible selling price.

I would put them both up for sale, take the cash and go shopping.

But if you like the Liner, and you want to keep it, just keep it, and sell the other one.

Only you can decide what you want, and what you will be happy with.

BTW, this was the first mistake:

"when i bought it it was in feb and in the guys garage so was unable to test drive but he did start it for a moment in the garage..."

Always get a water test.

I used to really enjoy these forums, could usually get good advice on things i might have questions about. But as soon as i buy a bayliner all bets are off. All i got was bashing! I'm sorry i didn't get a cobalt or similar boat. I could care less if it's bayliner, stingray, four winns ect. ICOULD CARE LESS if it"s 30yrs old as long as it was taken care of. OK it's 30 yrs old it aint like a damn car it don't get driven everyday, what typically used on average 10 times a summer or so. I know a guy with a cobalt and has nothing but trouble with it! Know people with bayliners, tahoes, and searays with no trouble at all. Congrats you have a boat more expensive than mine cudos to you.

jeff

you asked for opinions, you got them. Yes, you got more information and some sidebars on other aspects but I see how they correlate to your questions, particularly around availability and interchangeability of parts, and historical knowledge on the quality and issues with certain hulls.

Every manufacturer has their lemons and the shining stars.

Don't take it to heart....its opinions. Garner the value of the knowledge and suggestions, ignore the ones you find irrelevant.

No one is attacking you personally. They're just expressing themselves.

I think Roscoe summed it up nicely. Now it's up to you decide. If you keep them both, sell them, trade them, etc, the decision is yours and affects no one on these forums

My 1.98 cents worth (Sorry, I'm Canadian.... our money isn't at par with the US so my 2 cents is worth less)

Re: Have a little delima

I just read through this whole thread again trying to see where we went wrong. It seems to have started when Bondo referred to the BL as a Bilgeliner. He always calls then that. Thing is, Bondo has forgotten more about boats and I/O system then we'll ever know. I don't think the Bayliner sounds like a bad boat at all. With used boats it's all about how they were maintained. Brand means little. I'd rather have a well maintained Bayliner than a Cobalt that was left open to the elements.

I think where we're getting off track is with the money. The $2500 for the nice Bayliner is a fair price. The boat does have an OMC and it is a fact that people do avoid them due to parts and service availability. So I just don't see the profit potential there. If you want to buy that boat and run it yourself, I do NOT see a problem with that. Sell the '72 for whatever you can get for it.

There really is good advice on this forum. I hope this thread can continue on a better note.

I think your right ezmobee, was not lookin for an argument but s*** happens. maybe i should not have started the thread was just wanting opinions on selling the bayliner for more than i payed for it witch i know i can get more than what i payed for the boat people are buying boats left and right here in MO on CL. just wanted to get opinions on fixing or selling the old boat thats it! but it turned into more, o well.

Re: Have a little delima

when you start talking about fixing boats to sell for a profit, you are going from a hobby to a business. When it's a hobby, and you get lucky with a profitable flip, it's fun. But you seldom account for the value of your time when you do this. You HAVE to when you start a business analysis.
You have asked for opinions about your business plan, not about how to fix something. The answer to THAT question is that your business plan is flawed. That is not the same question as "do I have a decent boat" or "should I fix this up to use for a couple of years" or "between the two boats I have, which should I keep."

In my area I don't think you could get much more than the $2500 you'll pay for it. However, a really well done ad goes a LONG way. Takes tons of pictures (host them on photobucket and insert them into your ad instead of using CL's lame pic hosting) including some of it on the water and heck maybe even a video. When people are looking for something turn key, your boat with a recent video of it on the water will really help it sell. And hey, lots of people don't know about OMCs.

Re: Have a little delima

I don't mean to chime in here as I'm a total newb to owning and maintaining a boat but I do take a little issue with the OP on the front of asking for opinions and then receiving them - good or bad.

I came to this forum for advice. I looked at an older classic that I thought was great and going to make me happy. When I posted on this forum asking what people thought of it I got poo in my wheaties. Honestly - that's EXACTLY what I was looking for (metaphorically of course). Nevertheless the fine people of this forum have about 10000000000 X the knowledge I do so ignoring it regardless of the sentiment you have towards your boat would be foolish.

I've never owned a boat. But even I could tell you that Bayliners have a bad rap and it isn't just for a few bad apples. Your boat (or potential) could totally break that mold and may never have problems (i sincerely hope it doesn't). But I'm guessing those on here aren't just poo'ing in your wheaties because they've had NO experience with them and just heard the same things I have.

Don't believe everything EVERYONE tells you but do believe the people you trust. Best of luck!

Heard anything bad about Starcraft Pontoon's? Why so much anger. These are just opinions. Take 'em or leave 'em and move on.

Jeff I think you wouldn't have an issue with the opinions if your weren't invested 4k+ into them. Had you just been out looking and this same advice was given you, it would make you that much better of a shopper. By the way I like Bilgeliners as long as they have Merc. in them but not a 470. You should be thanking Bondo for being so frank with you he only has your best interest in mind. Granted he might have used a little more tactful way of saying it but sometimes the truth hurts. Best of luck with whatever you do sounds like the fastest one I could get on the water is the one I would choose. Just run the bayliner for 2 years then sell it for what you payed for and move on to new adventures. By the way where you at in Mo?

Re: Have a little delima

take your lumps and move on, the 72 is to old will probably need floors ,stringer, transom if it is fiberglass. Now a aluminum that old different story. Use the bayliner till it pukes sell the other for next to nothing or part it out.

Re: Have a little delima

In the bayliner hayday. it was hated by the "so called true boater" they wanted the hand crafted boat , NOT the production line made boat. they thought of them as a yugo or a chevy vega. bayliner used the force engine, "NOT THE POWER HOUSE MOTOR"! Truth is, bayliner saw need for an inexpensive boat for everyone else. They flooded the market ,with the low cost, reliable, under powered, every man's boat. It's just that the company cut too many corners and turned a good idea into what you are hearing about today. my 02.
