I have a 1975 omc 120 hp I/O motor, and im not quite sure where I put the tilt and trim fluid or what type of fluid I can use. I've heard different things from different people and now im confused. can i use transmission fluid or just regular oil? Also im not sure where to add this at. On the left side of the motor looking at it from in the boat, right next to the dip stick is and cap on a chain, i belive that might be where i add the oil but not sure. Please help, I just bought this boat and this is my first I/o motor \,

thanks dave m

Re: have a question on what type of fluid to use??

that cap you're looking at may be the tube to suck out the engine oil when using a suction pump. does the end have a garden hose fitting on it? look at that tube & see if it is attached to the engine block. if it is, DON'T pour any transmission fluid in there, or you'll be buying a new engine. i'm not sure where u add the trim & tilt fluid on you're unit, i just wanted to warn u about adding tranny fluid in what may be the engine. i suggest u pick up manuel for you're boat, u can learn a lot & save some $$$$ while doing so.

TO answer your questions look to the left of the engine and you should see a small round component about 6 inches tall. Next to the battery. This is not part of the engine. There are two screws on the front. One is the vent screw and the other is the fill. You fill these unit like the stern drive. Fill till fluid comes out the vent screw. USE 10W30.
Hope this helps

Re: have a question on what type of fluid to use??

Dml
First need to know if this is 120 hp OMC stringer. If it is and I think it is then here is the lub for engine and outdrive.

Engine oil use 30 weight above 32 degrees. Oil is added by removing the rubber stopper in top of valve cover and adding oil. Oil removed by suction pump on tube next to dip stick on starboard side of engine.

Intermediate houseing use OMC HI-VIS gearcase lube. Added from outside the boat just above the outdrive to port side of center. Drained on starboard side just below ball gears.

Upper Gearcase use OMC HI-VIS lube. Check and top off at oil level dipstick on top of outdrive. Drain refill from oil drain plug on outdrive just below ball gears on starboard side.

Lower unit Gearcase use OMC HI-VIS LUBE. check level at level plug on starboard side of outdrive just above cavaition plate. Drain and fill from drain plug on starboard side of outdrive just below prop shaft.

Tilt unit use 30 or 10-30 motor oil. Check at fill plug on tilt unit on port side attached to intermediate unit. Drain and fill from drain plug on bottom of tilt unit on port side.

Also have have 9 zert fittings for OMC TRIPPLE GUARD GREASE.

If you do not have a manual you need to buy one.

If your motor is not a 120hp stringer then do not use this post.

Dml
To start with if it is a 1975 it is not a Cobra as Cobra did not come out until 1984 or 85.

The stringer has a big rubber boot around the intermediate housing to the hull. The outdrive rises with a big 1/4 circle gear on port side. Has tilt switch to raise outdrive and selectric trim model have a seperate trim switch to raise front of motor to trim boat. It would be a serries 400. Outdrive would be white or silver.
