No you shouldn't have to do it again as long as it was the right prop set-up to begin with. The only thing you might run into is if you put a higher pitch prop on the motor and it slows down your idle-in-gear too much. As long as you are at the correct RPM at WOT you are just fine.

Ok thanks...I was planning on getting another 3 blade prop and possibly back to a 17 pitch depending on the rpm at WOT with my 4 blade.

Any diagnostic should start with a compression test, then a spark test.
Then a fuel system check.
Ethanol is messing up a LOT of outboards.Primarily the fuel pump diaphram. Then the hoses.Read my signature.Put in a good water/fuel seperating filter.J

getting parts for that (1975') motor should be no problem heck as far as mercs go it's kinda new and if it has strong even compression don't let it go with the old boat when it comes time for a new boat

Re: Have about had it with this motor!

Well i took it out to the lake yesterday and again it ran awesome! I adjusted the mixture screws out about 1/8 each trying to smooth out the hole shot and got it to where I think I will be happy with it. It screamed around the lake all morning and topped out at an indicated 43 mph! I would think if that is at all correct in speed...that it is great for a 4 blade prop.

The thing I am wondering is...I moved the transom pin back up to the third hole from the second, would it get a bit more speed if I had it in the second pin hole? I know a 4 blade is not a speed prop but I was just wondering. Now I just need to get that darn tach working so I can see what the rpm is at WOT.

When I picked up my 73 1500 it was sitting at a marina. The guy that owned it had given up on it.I talked to the owner of the marina(OMC/BRP Dealer)and he told me it wouldn't run right because the reeds were shot.Having my doubts about the reeds I decided to take a chance on it.Long story short it's running good now with the same reeds in it.

Thank Gott for those omc "outboard" experts, they wouldn't know a good running engine 'cause those BRP products smoke like h**l and cause fogging of the brain.
Keep that 1500 running forever!

I bought a tired old XR4. Fixed about a dozen certified mechanic installed bugs in it, and now have a neck snapper.

Now that it is running a lot better I do plan on keeping it a few more years at least. The wife and I are talking about having baby so a newer boat is not looking to be in my near future...lol
