Re: have gun will travel???? its getting to be as bad as dodge city

After several trips out last fall,, i come to the conclusion that i should not be there if there are more than 3 boats waiting to load in the evenings .
My cure is to go around to the Marina coffee shop ,,kick back ,,enjoy the EyeCandy and coffee for half hour,, then go out on the deck to watch the younguns make total AH's of themselves at the launch ramp . After dark,, i turn on the docking lights and leisurely load the boat and go home a happy fishin-boater !!

Plus one. This thread really makes me appreciate where I boat. I see very little of this kind of nonsense. There are occasional issues, but they're rare, even on the ramp. Typically around here one who is having issues is more likely to be assisted than cursed. Guess I'm spoiled.

Nah!.....Not going to let anyone ruin my day. I'm on the water almost everyday. I have nothing to complain about. Sometimes I go as far as to shake my head.

"Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame." -Ben Franklin

"The great object is, that every man be armed. [...] Every one who is able may have a gun." -Patrick Henry

“An armed society is a polite society.” -Robert Heinlein

“Arms in the hands of individual citizens may be used at individual discretion in private self-defense.” -John Adams

I find the best thing is to just assume everyone is armed. It keeps us all civil.

However, the guy who says simply showing or pulling a weapon is a crime is sometimes/some states incorrect. Often people are misinformed on gun laws. I'm of the mind that mine will stay safely tucked in it's holster unless I'm threatened. At that point, only two things can happen. Yes I carry it always.

Lastly, be sure you know where you're boating. Many (all I think) Army Corp of Engineers lakes are off limits to firearms...period!

Correct: Also no alcohol

Nah. It isn't Dodge City or even close. It is more like CB radios in the 80s; lots of tough talk, threats and chest pounding that would turn into something a lot more civilized in actual face to face confrontations.

Where YOU live. Trust me; along the East Coast, there are plenty of fights and accidents between people who are hostile with eachother (esp NJ/NY/Philly shore/beach towns).

I won't go back to beautiful Cape May or Ocean County because the very people I grew up with (Philly guy -- born 'n' raised) have ruined it.

I enjoy the great, respectful people I find in and around the Chesapeake.

There are areas with such hostilities between fishermen, PWCs and pleasure boaters that it just ain't worth being there. Drunken fights, accidents and vandalism. I've had friends killed -- literally -- over parking spots, and that inner-city, urban atmosphere permeates some shore/beach towns.

You can have and consume alcohol in boats on most Corp lakes. But not in their parks. If consumption is allowed, you cannot be over the legal limit, though, and if you have an accident while consuming alcohol (even if below the legal limit), you will automatically be charged with BUI. This from the Corp Boating Safety Course taught at the Corp Ranger Head Quarters on Lake Lanier (Georgia).

Some of the ramp anger could be mitigated by the corp, local police, TVA or who ever else regulates the lakes. It makes me madder than heck when we get to the ramp and 3/4 of the boat trailer parking spaces are occupied by 1 car (no trailer). That leaves alot of people fighting for the few remaining spots or parking where you shouldn't. I have even asked a corp ranger about this while he sat there and watched a group of teenagers take up 4 parking spots just hanging out. His reply, "it's public property", that may be but he also could have asked them to be considerate.

To me if the policing agencies spent a little more time enforcing no wake zones, parking areas and general boating rules instead of boats anchored up in coves minding their own buisness alot of this anger would be eliminated.

Road rage?

I am a big fan of road rage. Or better put, I will not tolerate rudeness. Not in a bar, not on the road, not on the water.

Flame away, I could care less. Just remember before you choose to behave badly, folks like me are out there.

Easy there Glenn...step away from the Anabol and stop listening to your own "music".

You're NOT that big...You're NOT that bad.

Anyhow...

I'll even admit I get a little hot under the collar when idiots are trying to "bump draft" on the highway, and am always tempted to allow them to buy me a new car with nothing more than a tap of the brake. However...it's not worth the time or headache.

While stationed in NAB Coronado(SWCC-Team12), I probably encountered the WORST drivers known to the free world...only drivers in countries where running water, electicity, and closed system sewage disposal is a luxury are more aggresive and impatient than those in SoCal.

On the water...for pleasure...of course there are jags out there who don't know the basic "Rules of the road" concerning stand-on and give way vessels, signage, bouys etc...and that does irritate me but not enough for it to ruin my day.

Hey Oskosh you wanna see bad the drivers in vegas are "worlds worst" ! I love Coronado :) one of my favorite places in the world, I don;t really care much for the freeways in or out. I didn't think I'd ever say thank heaven for the CHP (being a commercial driver) but at least them will the help of Cal Trans make the roads a wee bit safer (alot) then Nevada!

Re: have gun will travel???? its getting to be as bad as dodge city

I go boating at least 6 mos out of the year- and Fri/Sat /Sun all Summer long on a really crowded metropolitain lake (Grapevine) and rarely have any problems and do not see many-- I used to throw golf balls at jet skiers that get within range while fishing but jestering with your arms in the shape of a "W" and yelling "WTF" works pretty well. I had a buddy with a jet boat that could throw a 20ft x 100ft roostertail that would run down idiots and knock em off their jet skis .
Just take a photo of thier #s and send it to the cops if needed.
I do have a pet peeve with folks who do not understand what "No Wake Zone" means and ask them if they know what it means if they come close enough.
There are plenty of people who have no clue!

You should see what a well designed "spud gun" will do...We used to set up on shore and basically conduct artillery practice on jet skiers AND boaters violating the no-wake, and restricted zones around North Island/NAB!! Lots of Aqua-net and red potatoes were sacrificed:D!

Funny...I'll be right down the road in Bedford next month.

I've said it many times before,

Lake time is just for relaxing, Life is too short to be mad.

The following is directed at Jet Skiers:

If you jeopardize the safety of my children you will find out just how fast a fuel injected 454 in a 25' boat will go and I'm bringing the cops with me. Had to do it once and that was enough I don't go to that lake anymore if I am planning on taking the kids, its just not worth it and I have not had a problem since.

Is this new?

I didn't get to spend much time outdoors last year, but as recently as two years ago all of the corps of engineers facilities I regularly use permitted alcohol (lake, campgrounds, parks).

I know they have one alcohol-free campground at the lake I do most of my boating on, but the other 4 or 5 on that lake it's no problem. And the lake itself is a corps maintained reservoir, but I've never heard of any alcohol regulations there that are different from any other lake in the state.

Hog,

You can't really "enforce" parking areas in terms of vehicles that are legally registered being legally parked in a parking space. It's public use and there's no legal standing (unless the spaces are marked "vehicles with trailers only") to make them move. It's not about being considerate, heck a person could argue it's inconsiderate to ask people who were there before you to move just because you have a trailer and want the spot they currently occupy. I think this also adds to the public view of boaters as people with entitlement complexes (as is reflected in some of the more recent legislation). If I have to walk a little ways extra on account of kids shooting the bull in the parking lot, so be it; I'd rather see them doing that than some of the other stuff kids get into these days.

Lipp,

Absolutely right! If there's a problem on the lake, call the cops. That's what they get paid to do.

I fish the shoreline at night for walleye at certain times of year and the boat guys and the shore guys have a pretty good respect for each other around here. The shore fishermen keep the lanterns on so we know not to troll over top of them, and when we pass we'll let them know what we marked on the sonar, where, and what lures seem to work best that night. Sometimes if boats aren't full we'll ask some of the shore guys (that we know in passing) if they want to come aboard and kill the time between bites. They appreciate the offer, and we always leave with our sides hurting from the stories these guys tell.

Last season a guy who was new to the night bite was fishing from shore and didn't have a lantern. As we passed he went ballistic; namecalling, swearing, etc. I apologized and told him I couldn't see him and I'd be past him in a few seconds. It went quiet for about 30 seconds and I saw a shadow moving in the rocks. A few more seconds later and I heard a distinct "click". I told everyone to cover face and shortly after SWMBO was yelling that she got hooked in the hand. Turns out my instinct was right - he threw a lure (with three treble hooks) into the boat, and it would have caught her in the face if she didn't have it covered with her hands.

I called myself doing the right thing and calling the cops. The dispatcher told me they couldn't be bothered sending someone out. I wrote a strongly worded letter to the Mayor's office the next day (and copied the chief of police) explaining that I realized the resource problems inherent in law enforcement and would be more than happy to deal with it myself if it happened again, provided they were okay with whatever the results may be. Got a phone call the following day with the contact information of a deputy at the sheriff's office who happens to run the county boat and lives 30 seconds from the marina. He called me a few hours later and we talked for a good while and actually have kept in touch ever since.

Point being, no matter what happens think long and hard before doing something you might later regret. And if you're dead set on retaliation, make sure the punishment fits the crime. Better yet, call the cops; they provide a service you pay for, so use it. I understand that tempers flare in situations like this, but there's no sense in taking a life (or causing serious physical harm) over a few scratches or a wet t-shirt. Hopefully we can get back to a place where we respect each other, whatever the differences. We all put 'em on one leg at a time.

I am pretty laid back person till it comes to my friends and family being misstreated or hurt by someone intentionally is where I draw the line.
Somthing of this nature is a threat to the safty of me and mine will be handled with with no regard for what comes after.

Sort of... Most states have brandishing laws. If you pull your weapon and display it in a menacing manner, you are brandishing. 100% illegal in many states. For the ones that it is not illegal, cops can and will figure out a bunch of other charges that will stick. (menacing & disturbing the peace are the common ones.)

Anyway, in reality if you pull a gun on a PWC, chances are you will spend the night in jail and your record won't be quite as clean after it.

This is true and was what I was told, most of the ramps around my home lake offer limited parking so it's not an issue of walking, it's an issue of being able to get your boat in the water and park. What has really set me off is when half the trailer parking spaces are taken and half of them by just cars. That forces you to park in the grass or by the street where you run the risk of a parking ticket by our dutifull public servents.

I understand the police cannot force a legally parked car to move but there would be nothing wrong with them talking to and asking the car people to at least share some spots or heaven forbid, park in the car spots and walk to the dock. But in reality they would rather sit on their a** and wait for the opportunity to write a parking ticket.

Guys, this has been debated to the point of beating a dead horse, check your home state laws plain and simple, this site is a very good resource for nearly all issues surrounding boating, but Guns are not one of them, I am a CCW carrying NRA and GOA member and I will be the first to say that an armed society is a polite society but please make sure you check your home state laws regarding this issue.

The last thing any of us want is for a member to get himself in trouble because of what he heard on this site, educate yourself. Call the POPO and get them on their way to resolve any serious issues, your gun is the final solution only.
