Hog,

I get what you're saying completely. It's happened to me on more than one occasion. But I think it's less a matter of police involvement and more a matter of getting parents to actually bother raising their kids with some good sense. If I did something like that as a kid, and it got back to my parents house, I would have been traveling on feet for a while.

Century,

If you followed through on your statement, it would have landed you in jail. Lipp is right - know the law folks. In many states you have both a "duty to flee" and a requirement that deadly force is used only in cases of imminent and serious physical harm. Operating a boat while it's under way makes it hard to beat the duty to flee part, and catching a couple of treble hooks in the hand hardly counts as imminent and serious physical harm. Between us girls, we all know what happens when people mess with those we have a duty to protect; but in practice we don't do them any good sitting in jail while the legal defense fees pile up.

I don't think society at-large is afraid of people being armed; I think they're afraid of arming people who think it's acceptable to use deadly force in response to what would be considered misdemeanor crimes.

I heard a good quote on a TV reality show tonight. Arsonists were caught setting a house on fire on the homeowners security cameras. He told the newsman, "If you can't SHOOT'EM, shoot'em w a video camera!;)

Where YOU live. Trust me; along the East Coast, there are plenty of fights and accidents between people who are hostile with eachother (esp NJ/NY/Philly shore/beach towns).
I blame Snooki and company.

Snooki and company are a sign of the problem -- not the cause. At a minimum, they're mere symptoms of the disease. Just some of the lovely people you'll find.

Ugh.

Thank Og for the Upper Chesapeake. Good people. Good times.

I won't even mention the fact that Snooki lives about 10-15 miles from me.

Some people are oblivious to ramp etiquette, spending 10-15 minutes prepping while on the ramp when they should have done that at home, or they underestimate launching/retrieving by themselves. You start to get a mob mentality when there are 3-4 boats circling waiting to come in or trucks stacked up waiting to launch. I find it's a lot easier to offer help versus beeping and cursing.

Same here

This thread has cooled some, but still seems like it can go nowhere but down. Let's end it on a high note. Closed :)
