I have a 1992 15HP Merc that I haven't used for 10 yrs. I am going to put it to good use this summer so I took it in for some general maintenance. This motor has less than 30 hours and starts on 3 pulls after sitting in storage after all this time. I feel like I have been over charged and would like your opinions if I was or if I just need a reality check.

Oil Change and filter..................$115.00
Replace water pump.....................$129.00
Basic tune up..........................$172.00

They also wanted to rebuild my carborator for only $217.

I was also charged $16.66 in shop supplies and $8.33 in environmental disposal fees.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Massively!!!!

Oil Filter???? There is no oil filter!!!! And I assume you are referring to the Lower Unit Lube.
Water pump kit is around $30 total for the entire assembly....
Tune up is non existent on outboard if the electronics, carbs, and fuel delivery system is working properly....

What did they do for the tune up?????

Re: Have I been over charged?

The $129 for the water pump is ok, but I agree with KClost on the other stuff. I am assuming the same as he is, a 2 stroke engine? It does not have an oil sump. Pretty expensive spark plugs, and $16.66 for a pint of lower end lube. I think it is time to have a serious talk with the owner of the shop.

Me too.... that significantly too high. Unless it's a 4 stroke, there IS NO oil change and filter. And general tuning outta take 1/2 hour tops on that little critter.

-W

Well boys the farthest I go back in real data is '94 and there tain't any 4 cycles. The only 15 hp offered isn't even a looper....cross flow. So find an oil filter on that sucker.

It has one! The fuel filter, Har Har. Sorry for the off colored candor. Couldn't resist. Hate people who take people to the cleaners and just plain flat LIE!

Mark

Re: Have I been over charged?

Well thanks everyone for confirming I got taken for a ride. I was afraid you guys were going to say that. I took the easy way out (or so I thought). The kicker was when they called me to say I should have my carb rebuilt another 200 plus. Guess my next purchase will be the repair manual. Sure hope they can sell me one for under the price of the carb rebuilt......NOT!

Armed with what you know now... I'd go in there mad as a hatter and threaten to notify Brunswick Mercury etc etc etc. Don't let crooks get away with it. As soon as you know the truth, silence makes you complicit in the next customer screwed. Strike a blow for all boaters and honest shops!

-W

we have a television news caster, here that, just love to get hold of stuff like this. he does a surprize interview, and discredits the thieving busness men on the tube. doctors, lawyers, contractors, service depts, insurance companies. he really rakes them over the coals. of course when they make it right with the customer, he does a 5 second spot saying so.
