Badminton
Have you actually ever watched a collegiate match or actually played the game? And when I mean play the game, I mean on a regulation court, inside a gymnasium.

I am a tennis player and played collegiate tennis. Just like badminton, anyone can go out and hit the shuttle back and forth as well as anyone can go out and hit tennis balls back and forth with very little training. To actually be good enough to play at an Olympic level takes a lot more skill and athletic ability than you can possibly imagine.

Simple, the Olympics have had and continute to have some strange ideas of what a sport is. Take it for what it's worth. Shrug...
You mentioned club swinging and rope climbing as Olympic sports to start off your thread when they aren't even 2012 Olympic sports. So why even mention them?

That one I have to agree is a puzzling one to have in the Olympics. I think the fact that its popular to watch is why its in there.

Yes, I didn't find it to be too big a deal....lots of fun though and way better than playing outside in the wind and yep, I've seen televised matches.
Still, in my opinion, nowhere near the physical fitness level required for the biking, soccer, gymnastics (definitely), swimming, track and field, etc.
Badminton to me is more like a 'technique and hand eye quickness' thing....but I think of the Olympics as relating largely (solely?) on a very heavy physical fitness prowess element.

Just about blew a knee out playing one year of competitive badminton.
(still have scars in the back of my head from doubles, OUCH!!)

Badminton, basketball, volleyball, in my opinion are indoor late fall/winter sports, because when its cold and miserable out who wants to be outside, head to the gym.

No more puzzling than badminton. One persons curling is another's badminton.. Curling is probably even more popular to watch, which isn't saying a whole lot. I must say, I enjoy watching curling too. My family thinks I'm nuts.............

Ok here is one for you guys:
If the use of an external piece of equipment is allowed and 'key' to a sport...why isn't motocross in the Olympics vs. Horsejumping? (note: it might have something to do with the sport of kings). Motocross in my opinion is definitely harder and definitely more entertaining to watch. However...once you introduce motorized vehicles, I guess its 'game over' (pardon the pun).
As well I guess there is no linear reasoning for what is or will be an Olympic sport but the criteria seems to veer here and there on what qualifies to be in.:)

I guess it all depends on who happens to be on the olympic committee and their preference..... If they are the people who can add a sport.... I guess gas, oil and exhaust isn't sophisticated enough.......

Must be slow in Missouri!

You still never answered my question on why club swinging and rope climbing has any relevance for discussion for the 2012 Olympics that we are watching.

You really think the beach volleyball is being played indoors with a little bit of sand on the floor?

Sports require sweat. It doesn't count if you're grossly overweight and you break into a sweat walking 10 feet to pick up a bowling ball.
Hey... I resemble that remark!!!

Wasn't there an olympic sport at one time that had to do with dancing around with long ribbons? Seemed more like an artistic ballet or something. I remember watching parts of that and trying to figure out just what the heck they were doing.

Has anyone watched Water Polo? It's def a tough sport......but the incessant 'whistles' for the constant fouls is ridiculous!!

They need to change the rules so that the "grabbing, clutching and dunking" etc cost the offending team much more.

The constant 'whistles' make the sport unwatchable IMO

do they still do equestrian events? could never understand how the person on the horse always gets the accolades and the true athlete gets a bucket of water and a bale of hay?? ( i do suppose they get priority for stud duty tho)
