For the last month or two I have been learning to sew, everytime I mention it people laugh at me. Can you picture a guy 6'3" and 250 Lbs sitting there sewing drinking a Bud Light? The main reason behind this is that I do alot of projects in te garage and am always stuck with not so great interior and would like to be able to recover seats, panels and whatever else pops up with out paying an arm and leg. I found an industrial sewing machine online cheap and picked it up and also my neighbor owns an auto upholstory shop and is giving me pointers.

That is all, laugh it up until you call me to fix that tear in your seat.

Hey, I'm not laughing. I would like to learn to sew myself. I have a buddy that can sew. He has made interior for two boats that I restored for people as well as the bags for the cornhole games that I make for people. I could save myself a lot of beer if I knew how to do it myself.:D

No laughing here. I can only "sew" with a needle and thread.

I will use braided fishing line for my thread when repairing fishing related items.

As long as it is an "Industrial" sewing machine and you are using it for re-upolstery and the like, you are okay. But the minute you start sewing doilies, needlepoint, quilts, etc, that is when you loose your MANCARD! :D

Not laughing here, I have been sewing for years. I have been using my wife's Kenmore sewing machine, matter of fact, on my first boat I made my own Bimini top. As a kid my Mom showed me how to hem my jeans on a sewing machine........Thumps up!

Re: Have to get it off my chest.

Yeah, I want to join you. I literally just put down a needle and thread as I was repairing one of my wife's blouses. I do all of the sewing here, and I don't care who knows it . . . Well except flippin' aspeck now that I find out he hands out and takes away MANCARDs, jeez . . .

I definitely want an Industrial sewing machine. I want to make heavy duty roll-up curtains for my patio. Want it to look like a full bimini enclosure thing with windows etc.

Re: Have to get it off my chest.

I mainly do upholstory but I see soo many things around the house that I can make for just about nothing compared to what the stores charge you. And yes I did make a doll, I did it just to see if I could It's front was thick leather and the back was boat vinyl and then I gave it to my dog, it lasted about 10 minutes.

QC since you are so close you can rent my machine by the week for a case of Bud Light if you are interested. Or just come over and use it.

EDIT: HAHA, the forum ***'d my initial insult! We'll try this one:

Nancy! ;)

Seriously, that is awesome. I've been keeping an eye out for an industrial sewing machine for ages, but refuse to spend $200+ for one. I'll likely have an upholstery shop do my seats this round. You are a lucky guy having a upholstery shop friend, too. Remember to post some pics of your projects. I'd love to see some upholstery how-to threads on here.

My neighbor kicks *** I have learned more by just seeing what he does than I could have come up with on my own. I paid $150 for mine a few months back and it is in great condition, the guy I got it from had it left over from a divorce and just wanted it gone, It came with all sorts of little attachments for things that one day I may learn to use.

:D:D You know you're a fisherman when you used braided line for things other then spooling up your reel. I'd bet you would use fluorocarbon line if you want it to be incognito huh? :D

While your at it sew me up a mooring cover for my boat. I'll send you a case of bud light.

But seriously, my father was a sailmaker. Made everything from dacron sails on sail boats to boat covers, tarps and convertible tops for boats. Tents, tent trailers and the like. He did if for 40 years before retiring. He could sew up a storm. Had old belt driven sewing machines. I never learned the trade. He was just too darn cranky to work with...lol.

Wish I had a nice heavy duty machine. Messed around with them a bit over the years, but I am far from good with one. Lots of info on the web about sewing, especially vinyl for seats.

I do have the older belt driven machine but I am not the greatest either, my mother can sew like no other but the point is that I need to learn not have her do all my work, I am still working on it. I am tempted to keep my old boat and throw new interior in it just for the practice.

Re: Have to get it off my chest.

WOW! everyone's coming out of the closet :D

(hate to say it, but I do the sewing at the house too )

I've done a few boat interiors and they have looked good, not professional by any stretch, but good enough the get compliments at the dock. Wished I had a commercial machine though, would make upholstery a lot easier and better looking.

I've done my cushions in my cabin, did the curtains, and made fitted sheets for the forward V berth. Nothing wrong with that. Its better than my friend that sewed his oats one night and paid for it for 18 years....................SS
