it looks like mercruiser is not supporting some of the 4.3L setups. those of us the have the exhaust manifold #807293A2 - 3, have been left out in the cold. the results of 4 months research has not developed a replacement system, for these batwings. the batwings are NLA. the Vortec engines cannot run on a 3" elbow/riser, the valve overlap causes the exhaust water to come back into the manifold and drain into the cylinders. the 4" elbow/riser is to large for this application. what do we do? put a water exhaust hole thru the transom and run megaphone headers. if some one has a solution with out changing the Y pipe please post.

You weren't hung out to dry. You can change the Y pipe and use the proper manifolds and risers.

Had you owned an OMC, then you would be hung out to dry.

RP, tried 58221 the 3" set, and 58222 not enough room. major refit to change Ypipe. presently i only have 1/2" clearance between starboard side and the power steering cylinder. was told that the batwings were not in production yet, been on the list for 2 years. GLM's web site says the batwings will be available 3/31/06.

I have heard that another company, based in Canada, was planning to make these for the Mercs and OMCs, the company is HGE, do a search to find their website.

HOLD EVERYTHING!!!!!!!

We just got a Merc service bulletin in the mail today. There is now a kit that adapts the standard 2 piece manifold and risers to the single piece Y pipe. I don't have the numbers with me right now, but it includes the hoses, clamps, and elbows (NOT risers and manifolds) so you can use the existing Y pipe

Updated my 1998 4.3L Batwings with two piece conversion kit from Performance Product Technologies www.perfprotech.com.I guess the difference is I have room for the 4" risers. Kit has manifolds, 4"risers, 4" bellows, and intermediate elbows. Connects right up to existing Y pipe.
Put about 50 hours on it last season with no problems except a small leak between the riser and the manifold that was my fault during install.

The bulletin is out for the fix. As usual Mercury service style, bring 1200-1500 bucks and they'll sell you parts. And tell you they're doing you a favor.

Great bit of insite there wizard.

Tashasdaddy, The kit (nuts, bolts, rubber exhaust tubes, hardware and instructions) only costs $165. The part number is 864293A02. You also need the 2 elbows between the risers and the Y pipe. Part number 14478T01.
It doesn't include the regular manifolds and risers (which you have now I think) You do need the 4" risers.
All in all, if you bought new manifolds and risers plus the kits and elbows from Mercruiser the tab would be only $100 more than just replacing the manifolds with like 1 piece manifold when Merc sold them (old price used for 1 piece manifold from merc).

I doubt you have that bulletin on disc there rodbolt, it just came in the mail from Merc today. The bulletin number is SMC 2005-12 but it's dated January 2006, so it's either new (while still having a 2005 date on it).

DonS
we have 4 discs now, however no one will put them on the hard drive and no one will put them up.so when the parts guys want to shift to anyother disc they toss whatever disc is in the drive on top of the tower.
so sometimes i just get fragments of bullitens or parts lists :) .
but ya gotta admit, your a hoe like me :)
had a customer last summer with a bad shift cable on a genII, management gave him the 3 to six week speech.
customer hit me with a double your money speech if its ready monday, I worked sunday. was on the marinas clock and mine so both had fun, customer got his rig and his guests had fun.
guy shelled out 150/hr but was happy he could take his folks out.
but now I have to see if the paper version is there.

Re: have we been hung out to dry by mercruiser?

i looked a merc express. kit $146.66 elbow 163.85 each. the reason i ask is that a 4" riser comes a 1/2' over the front edge of the y pipe this elbow has to have on heck of a bend in it. i borrowed a used 4" osco riser and a 14865 elbow wouldn't work.

Re: have we been hung out to dry by mercruiser?

a little more research. Merc express shows 2 y pipe applications and to different part #s. y pipe 807166A7 shows the elbow 14478T01, 2 piece application.. y pipe 807130A4 shows the 1 piece batwing, how can i tell which y pipe i actually have. it's be coming clear that two parts for the same engine is part of the trouble.

Good going DonS.

As of yesterday, that Bulletin hadn't reached my shop.Strange thing was,the parts price list refers to SB 05-12,but I couldn't even access it on line (Mercnet).Go figure.Guess Merc has the answers long before they tell the Dealer.

DHP

Re: have we been hung out to dry by mercruiser?

Whew what a pain! I am glad I got an extra set of OMC batwings when I heard they were getting hard to find. Since then the price had doubled on dougrussell.com! I figure I should get 4-5 years out of each set, so I only have 2 years on the set on it now, so I am OK for a long time!
BTW what was the idea behind the batwing design anyway, to eliminate the riser/manifold joint and internal leaks?? It would seem to be much harder to cast these things all in one piece.

Re: have we been hung out to dry by mercruiser?

from what i can tell by comparing the two, the batwings takes the discharge water up and over and discharges in a downward direction into the Y pipe. the two piece riser discharges the water at the end of the riser almost in a horizonal direction toward the stearn. this allows the valve over lap to suck the discharge water back into the manifold itself and into the cylinders. am i basically right don, rodbolt, dhp? if not i know you will correct me, please do. by the way went out this am. cannot find any # on Y pipe. damn i'm frustrated, and gun shy.
