OK, it's not really lost. We have a good idea of what part of the lake bottom it landed in.
The other day, we were out fishing. The wind came up, and we wanted to keep the boat from drifting so that we could cast in an area that usually has lots of fish. So I asked her to "throw the anchor over." She made her way to the front of the boat and did as I asked. The problem was that I had not asked her to make sure that the rope was tied to the anchor. Of course you can understand how this was my fault.
Although we didn't do so at the time, a day later we laughed about it. I wonder how often this has happened to others?
