I am new to the boating world but I am a diehard old car/travel trailer nut. I picked up my new project for this year It is a 1964 Lee Craft 18' Viking. It Is kind of funny my dad has wanted to buy this boat from our neighbor for about 20 years but when it came time to talk about making a deal they always lost interest for a few years. The boat was custom built by Ole Lee of Sommers MT. My neighbors Grandfather had a couple sons that liked to go fast but he didn't want them getting hurt. He asked Ole to build a boat that was fast but safe. Well here she is with her double thick deep V hull and extra high sides. It doesn't have many hours on it. the paint is hardly worn off the engine pulleys. I have heard it has less than 20 hrs. Near as I can tell the black AC Delco Oil Filter is from 64 and the oil looks pretty good But this weekend Include new oil and filter. My question is about the outdrive. It has a chevy/Merc 283 V8 with what I belive is a MCII out drive. The hole thing cranks upside down for transport. Do any of you have any tips or advice about these. Things to do/not to do. also I am needing the aluminum ring that goes around the ring gear that is used to put it in to transport mode. If you know of one please let me know.

looks really clean even the trailer. how does that drive turn like that upside down???
change all the fulids and put some oil in the clys and let it sit their first. so you dont hurts the rings

That is one cool boat. Bet it is fast. And the outdrive that swings up is very unique.

Welcome to iboats. before stating prime the oil pump, get the oil circulated and coated thru the engine. very nice boat, you get your best results,, by posting the engine and outdrive serial numbers, with questions in the merc I/O forum.

Agreed, that is one "Cool" boat man. Oh yeah... Welcome to iboats!

Never seen that drive before.

I figure its designed that way for two reasons:

#1) as a safety feature: if the boat is flipped upside-down you can still maintain propulsion.

#2) as an alternate 'air-drive': when there's too much wood on or in the water, you simply invert the leg and it becomes an airplane prop.

Brilliant!

You really should post your pics and questions on the I/O forum; maybe Don or one of the other boys have seen this before.

That is one great looking boat. If all else fails, take the old ring to a machine shop it shouldn't be too expensive to get a new one made.

Awsome boat, looks like it is in great condition.

As stated above, you definately need to post this in the I/O forum, somebody will be able to ID that drive.

Thanks for the great comments. The drive rotates up using a crank handle that turns a worm and ring gear set. The picture of it not very good. The crank handle just lifts of when not in use. I drained the oil tonight but won't have the filter until tomorow its the old canister type. Tomorow I will get the carb rebuilt and prime up the oil pump and hopfully see if she will roar to life. I tried to get the numbers of the drive but can you imagine that they put them were can't get your head in to read the stupid thing and there wasn't a mirror to be found in the shop.
