There are 10 kinds of people in the world:

Those that understand binary,

And those who don't.

I saw this poster on an episode of NCIS.

For those who make fun of me because I am baffled by current technology, I programmed computers (Z-80 and 1KB of RAM) to run demo robots with 1s and 0s.

Anyone else here ever speak directly to a central (maybe micro-) processor in binary?

Re: Have you seen this?

Here, I though I was old. ;)

A class in 8088 assembly language (1991), was the closest I ever got to working with straight binary.

At that time, I might as well have been flying a fighter jet, with my eyes closed, as to understand all that.

Did learn what a microprocessors actually does, which is count and move stuff that it counts, around.

A blast for the past, for sure. Thanks

Re: Have you seen this?

In the early '80s I was working for Aerospatiale Helicopters, (Now Eurocopter) as a tech rep and one of my jobs was to teach pilots a basic understanding of the autopilot on the Super Puma helicopter and an introductory phase was to try and teach them binary basics, That is another story in itself. They at least reached a level of understanding of which buttons to push.

Technology today makes that seem a hundred years ago.

Re: Have you seen this?

I have a binary digital time clock. People are always asking....what in the world is that?
Dos is as far as I go back...and that was a headache. I still have some of those programmable key boards around somewhere.
Binary would have been a major migraine headache.

Used to manually punch paper tape, and then cards, to program a couple of machines.

bit rate, baud rate, polarity, handshake..... why won't you work you piece of .........
don't miss that decade of changeover from tapes and cards to NC. I liked when a hole punch and role of adhesive tape could reprogram everything.

WE did the punch cards in advanced math class in high school. One wrong hole and the equation wouldn't work. Many years later, the Commanore 64 had a snowfall scene that you programmed for practice.

Programed many years ago using Boolean functions with octal. Also did some work using forth which was somewhat like basic in reverse polish notation much like the early H-P calculators.

I had to do some basic Z-80 programming when I was in school for electrical engineering.

Fellas, there is several reasons why the TRS-80 didn't last!!

Associates degree in computer Science. I switched to Mechanical Engineering because I couldn't stand that stuff. It's ironic however that my computer science background gives me an advantage as an engineer (not as much as my roommate who was a machinist before school).

As odd as this may sound its about something called pattern reconigtion. Each and every day i negoitate deals with cusotmers....In the end its all about how they reconize or rationalize numbers. Better said presentation....you can show a person a series of numbers in a certain format and sometimes they just shut off....And if you listen to them closely and present them the same numbers in a different format the smile and say ok.....The crazy thing is the bottom line is the same.

Here is what i am saying i firmly believe that the human mind reconizes pattern's in a very spefic way...and we are all different and very emotional as to how we see patterns...It really is amazing to watch.

Heck, around here some folks have trouble with the 10 positions of the kill switch.

Re: Have you seen this?

Way back when, I designed a processor board(Z80 processor) that interfaced between our missile processor and a Navy seeker. Didn't exactly code in ones and zeroes but coded in assembly code which is the next step up. I kept track all of my interrupt calls and stack management manually without a compiler. Wasn't fun!

Have done a lot of actual design of processors. First design was a Harvard architecture back before many were using that type of architecture. Made for a very fast processor that we used in missiles.
