This old motor hasn't been run for about 11 years or so. I tuned it up with a new impeller and plugs and fuel pump. It runs hi speed just dandy but doesn't want to idle slow enough for trolling. I took off the flywheel and reset the points which looked brand new to .02. anyone have any suggestions as to what would cause this idle problem.
It sputters getting slower, slower till it coughs and quits if I close down the rich/lean nob to below 3.
Are carb kits available for these?
Thanks for help guys, I appreciated it.

ps: I noticed the screen on the water intake on the lower unit is missing. Could the engine not be warming up enough because of this part missing?
I used 100% gas before mixing 50:1 ratio..(no alcohol additives etc)

100% gas is real bad. I hope you have fixed that problem. It's a very high chance that your carb has gummed up over time. Yes, carb kits are easily available at your local OMC dealer or right here at iBoats I believe. Thus I would get a kit and rebuild the carb.

Steve thanks for the post. I will look for a carb kit for it.

Um... what do you mean by 100% gas? I hope you don't mean 100% with no oil. If you did, well no wonder it won't idle. You destroyed the pistons.

What year is your 9.5? The 1964/65 motors did not idle very well. 1966-up were fine. Unless the rubber motor mounts are broken, which is all too common.

Where did the water inlet screen go? I'd be concerned it may overheat at high speeds without it. That will destroy pistons too.

I think he meant he used non-ethanol fuel mixed 50:1. You likely have a low speed circuit clog in the carb. I'd pull it apart before buying a kit, as you may not need one. Just make sure the ports are clear. I use canned 'duster' air to check passages. It should never 'cough' at 3 turns out! That's a 'lean sneeze' and at 3 turns, it should be way too rich to run at idle.
