Re: HDDVD or BluRay DVD?

I'm seeing a couple of terms being thrown around here that are confusing me. Maybe someone can help clarify.
I have been shopping for a new T.V. set for awhile now and my understanding is such: 480i is the base for a t.v. to even be called HD. Next up is 720p. 1080i seems to be identical to 720p if you just look at the pixel count. Top of the line is 1080p. Am I wrong so far?

480i/p is still Standard definition.....sometimes it can be considered "ED" or enhanced definition. (there were a bunch of these sets when flat screens first came out....and they still sell a few 20" EDTVs.)

720p, 1080i, 1080p are all High Definition. Though 720p and 1080i appear to be idendical, it really depends on what you are watching. For example, 720p does a better job with movement............so as a result FOX and ESPN broadcast in it because a lot of their HD programming involves sports.

If you want to chat about TVs, feel free to PM me. I work with this stuff everyday.

Blu Ray is HD. Its just a name like "DVD" or "CD" or "Betamax".....so no you will not need to get rid of anything.

It will be a long time before Blue Ray becomes the standard. It is still to expensive to market to everyone......until the players come down in price.

Really this death to HD DVD sort of sucks. The competetion would potentially have kept prices down. HD DVD and Blu Ray aren't really different as far as picture quality goes...........but HD was cheaper all around and better at reformatting older movies.
