The one in the basement of Polo Park Sears store, the older guy there has been a straight shooter to me and has been excellent with warranty etc. He beats everyones prices and give me the extended warranty for less than everyone else has...so far four TV's from him!

I seen one guy buy the floor model 60" Plasma for nearly half price and it was less than 4 months old,,,missed it by that much.:redface: Same 5 year warranty too.

I think I have found my tv:
Philips 52PFL5704D/F7 LCD for $1100 + tax at BJ's but researching online apparently there is some box store that has it for under 1k. I need to check cosco
Followed by:
Toshiba Regza 52XV645U LCD $1200 + tax at Best Buy

I will research online and see what I find. Any input welcome.

Out of the two you picked out I didn't see any names that I remember as being AVOID AT ALL COST brands so you're good to go. Its up to you now buddy! Make a choice, run with it, and watch NASCAR in high def!

Your prices are right on what I'm finding online so enjoy whichever TV you pick!

I have not gotten digital satellite yet. I have to work that detail out with the ex as she pays for the satellite. For now I will be enjoying hd on movies. I did play a regular dvd and it looked great. Cant wait to get the bluray installed tonight. Regular satellite does look a bit crappy in that big screen. Im using s-video for it. Will do my hdtv research a bit later this week. Thanks everyone for the help and tips.

You should be happy with your choice. People argue over the different technologies, but they both have very good pictures, plus they're both light years ahead of old tube TVs.

Standard TV does look bad on a big screen, but once you go to HD you'll love it.

Phillips is junk and the Regazas are not much better. Why not Panasonic?

I have one experience with Philips, labeled as a Magnavox.It was a DLP that crapped the bed after just under 4 years, causing us to make our latest purchase.
From searching online AFTER the purchase :redface: many people have had issues with the exact model number.

How come I still have a B&W TV that I watched the 1st moon landing (I was 2, and my mom forced me to stay up and watch it) and it still works? Yet these new ones are questionable?

I can probably find a tv model from each brand that will fit the junk bill. I did research the model and it all came positive and what is more important, Im happy, no matter what anyone else think.

I think we have beat this horse to death and this thread is done and finished.

It wouldn't surprise me. Never to fond of the DLP technology. Of course the failure may not have even been Philips fault. TI made the chips for those.

Yep, who knows? Pretty much why I gave no opinion of the Philips brand.

I'm just happy with today's technology we can watch AMAZING things right in our living rooms.

I think the Philips will be fine. One Philips LCD TV model won "Best of Show" at the 2008 CES so there are those that think highly of them.

Probably because they are a million times more complex! Of course it is usually something simple that brings them down. In the case of my parent's Samsung, it was a pair of $0.50 capacitors that should have had a higher voltage rating that caused it to fail after 6 months.

I was out boating that day, I can't remember what time of day it was on, but I did come home and watch. That TV is long gone though.

Years ago I worked for a retailer of mid to high end CE. Company was called Tweeter, you may have had them out your way at one point. The ROR (rate of returns) on all the Phillips plasma's we sold was close to 40%, It was the highest of all the set's we sold. For comparason the ROR on on Pioneers/Premiers at that same point in time was under 1%, Panasonic under 2%. The DOA on Phillips was 22-23% if memory serves me right.
The last 9 months I worked for that company I did home theater installations. We would warranty our labor for life (heh... lotta good that does now, when the company is gone). When the company warranteed labor, installers were not paid to work weather it was our fault or not. (which was completely wrong in itself, but that's for another story) I couldn't even begin to tell you how many hours I put in over 9 months (of my free time) swapping Phillips because of product issues or general customer dissatifaction.

As far as Regaza's.... I was out of the game for a while when I bought my Panny back in December. I did as much research as possible + talked with alot of my old co-workers that moved on to other CE companys, the general concesious was they were not bad, but not great, and a bit overpriced considering their performance was on the lower end of the scale.

I immediately discounted DLP from my list of TVs to consider simply because of the fact that a TV with moving parts (rotating color wheel) just didn't seem to sit well with me.

That to me says higher possibility of failure, regardless of manufacturer.

I went through all this a few months ago when I bought my new tv. I did all the research I could and read up on plasmas, lcd's, led's, dlp's. They all have their pro's and con's. I eventually settled on a 58" Panasonic plasma, just because it's what best suited my wants and needs. The only issue ive had with it is glare, but I knew that getting a plasma. As far as where to go, Id check out Tigerdirect as previously stated or Newegg.com. Im kind of a computer geek and get all my stuff from them. Newegg's sometimes a few bucks more but offer free shipping on a lot of what they carry. Tigers shipping is a bit can be a bit steep. I think I paid 120 bucks to have that plasma freight shipped from tigers warehouse in Chicago to Waterloo, ia. (about 6 hr drive) Unfortunately, newegg didnt carry that particular model I wanted.

Hmmmm, every hd dtv box I can find shows the output as 1080i. If I read right then that should not be a problem with my 1080p tv... Is that right?
