Fishing last weekend. The guy with the new boat goes to launch his boat. His trailer has bunks. He lets some line loose, backs down the ramp to launch and boom, the boat slides off the bunks onto the ramp.

It was just below freezing and his bunks must have been icey. He won't be doing that again. Luckily no damage to motor, only scrapes on boats and ground off part of the plug.

Sometimes the Earth's gravitational pull can really suck when you try to back a loose boat down hill.

I have to say that I do this. I have to back mine so far back I am walking in the water. I usually play out line, back into the water and let the boat float off the trailer, then I can slowly bring the trailer back into the shore by pulling back up the ramp. Of course I have never done it when I might have ice on my bunks.

I pull my transom straps, and usually pull the winch hook (leaving only the safety hook). If I'm launching solo (i.e. 1 adult), I tie a long rope to the bow, and to the courtesy dock so i don't have to go swimming...

Then I start the boat, make sure it's peeing properly, and leave it sitting there idling (with kid in it!) while I go park the truck...

Mine stays hooked on till I am down the ramp, out of the van and back with it !! stern end floats off the trailer and a gentle push, a few yards walk and she is tied up waiting while i park the van.
