I read that in another post.
do I only need to replace head gaskets and deflectors , or is there more to do?

Re: head gasket and deflectors

Yes when you pull the heads you need to change the deflectors and head gaskets.. But since you are there, you might as well pull the head covers and make sure all of the water passages are clear especially since these cool the top of the combustion chamber....

Does that motor have a pee hole, are all of the lines clear? If the impeller at one time came apart, maybe a peice got in there and plugged the hole, hose, whatever.....

Also, if you are unsure of the age of the T stats, I would replace it (them) all together, cleaning them and replacing them is not a fool proof way of making sure they are working properly..

A few extra $$$ for endless peice of mind.....

Just remove the head cover. Underneath it will look like a little maze that is built right into the head. Water enters on one end, zigzags through all these passages and out the other side. Once you pull the cover, it's easy to understand.
