head gasket cover torq settings??????

hi.. burned up my head gasket.... replacing it on a 1990 90hp FORCE...
- what are the torque recommendations for this

-is there a particular pattern / process for tightening the bolts on the head cover????


- any ideas on how to best remove the old gasket from the head?

Serial number 093699 and later, torque to 120 INCH pounds, then turn bolt an additional 1/4 turn.

Serial number 093698 and lower, torque to 225 INCH pounds.

Torque sequence noted below. Each number represents a bolt and order in which to tighten. Basically, you start out with the bolts in the middle of the head and work your way out towards the ends of the head. Torque in three steps. Don't torque to maximum in one step. If max is 120 inch pounds, first round start out at 40 inch pounds, second round 80 inch pounds etc.

thx a bunch.... one more question....any suggestions on how to clean off the old gasket....?

also... when i put the gasket on...do i need to put anything else on....? ie.. and sealants etc.... or just a clean gasket...?

I use several different tools. Depends on how hard it is to get off. Normally I use a gasket scraper. Some have a single edge razor blade, some have a thin steel blade. Doesn't matter just as long as you don't damage the sealing surface by gouging out the metal.

No sealant is required. Some folks do use RTV silicone sealant on the water passages. If you choose to use that, get a high quality automotive RTV silicone sealant, not the general purpose type found in hardware stores. Don't get any of the RTV on the metal ring that seals each cylinder.

I've done it both with and without sealant and it works either way.

thx... i was able to get the stuff off using a blade....slighty and gently taking off... u have been great with your info....

last question.... I PROMISE....you mention the 2 serial numbers for torque setting....

what do they refer to? i have a 1990 model 906x90a.... not sure what those numbers you posted mean?

There should be a serial number on the tag that has the model number.

Are these head bolts supposed to be replaced as they are torque to yield ,and all torque to yield bolts I've used are a one time use only,because on the first use they are stretched to their limit? Just wondering if the marine application of tty bolts are like automotive. MOPARMAN

I've never seen any indication in any of the manuals that they are torque to yield bolts. It's always good practice to replace if they show signs of excessive corrosion.

when you go to a certain torque and then so many degrees that is a torque to yield bolt, and I was curious whether or not marine applications were like automotive where you had to replace them every time .When you put that ''so many degrees'' extra on it ,it stretches the bolt which really is a more accurate way of tightening a bolt . The part about ''so many degrees'' is for applications where you don' have a bolt stretch gauge[ or you can't get it in the space to measure the bolt stretch]. Usually these type are a one use only bolt, but[ there's that magical word again] if you lay a straight edge scale along the threads,and the threads touch the edge of the scale[ruler] all the way down the side of the bolt it possibly can be reused, if it has low places where the threads don't touch then its over with for that bolt. Sorry about the long post, just curious about the use of tty bolts with marine engines. Thank you for your reply pnwboat. MOPARMAN
