Head Gasket Replacement

After replacing the head gasket on my 1956 CD-13, I torque to specs, 60-80 in/lbs. After the initial running, I'm supposed to re-torque the head again. Is that when the head is still hot, or should I wait until it cools down?

+1. After you've re-torqued it you should be good to go.

Re: Head Gasket Replacement

Thanks guys, wasn't sure. I think last time I did it, was when it was still hot. Last time I took it on the water and opened it up WOT, the gasket blew between the 2 cylinders. This time I really took my time and re-dressed the head with a sheet of sandpaper and a granite surface plate that we have at work. Pressure tested at 70-75psi for both cylinders when I got it back together.

It was warped pretty bad. I think that was the big problem as far as getting and keeping it running. I took it out yesterday and opened it up, it seemed to run well at WOT.

Now I need to spend time on the shifter problem, and lower unit seals.

What's the shifter problem ??

I started a thread a few weeks ago on it. That thread has some more details in it. You can add to that one, or I can start a new one. It is still not solved. http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-ev...johnson-5-5hp-cd-13-shift-problem-625212.html

But, I was still having problems with the powerhead. I hope that I have that part fixed now. :joyous: Now, onto the lower leg.

Shifting is a hit or miss ordeal right now. Once it is in gear, it seems to stay in gear. Getting into gear though,

Hello again Mark. Have you checked the shift rod linkage located behind the small, oval window on the leg? They can often times wiggle loose a bit and cause trouble shifting. However, if it feels like you're hitting a log, or submerged object and the motor jumps out of gear, that is indicative of a worn clutch dog.

Re: Head Gasket Replacement

I just took it out for the last run of the weekend. I ran it almost WOT all the way around the lake, about 15 minutes. She ran perfect and never popped out of gear. :joyous:

It's just getting into fwd/neu/rev that's problematic. I hope it would be the shift rod linkage coming loose. Sounds like a simple adjustment. Where is this window you are referring to?

Thanks,
Marv
