You could private pay your medical bills for the stupid visits like colds, boo boos, etc. Get a catastrophic policy to cover anything major.

or, run to Mexico, denounce your American citizenship then run back and you won't have to worry about insurance. :) Of course you better do this before Aug. 1st in case you trip and fall on the way.

COBRA seems very expensive, Heinz, and private insurance even worse, but let me tell a sad tale here.

I retired at 62 and COBRA-ed my insurance until about 63-1/2. $160/mo as I recall. Nothing happened during that 18 months.

When the COBRA ran out I approached several private ins co.s. The best bid I got was $750/mo.

I had 18 months to go until Medicare and my income was about $1200/mo. I decided to bet $750/mo. that nothing major would happen in those 18 months.

During the 18 months I had a double heart bypass and a ruptured esophogus (perforated ulcer). I lost my bet and shrunk my retirement savings by almost $200,000. Fortunately, that was before the dot-com/9-11 crash in the market or I would have been wiped out completely.

I recommend that you get some sort of catastrophic event coverage or you could be reduced to poverty overnight.

Heinz,

Been in your position. I'd recommend doing the COBRA for as long as you can and in the meantime look for a private insurance which is going to be expensive.

I don't mean to jump into your business, but if you haven't already....look into Unemployment Insurance benefits. I'm not sure of your exact situation and it's none of my business, but generally speaking if you quit you won't qualify, but if you were laid off or fired, you'll more than likely qualify for benefits.

Here's the EDD website address. http://www.edd.ca.gov/fleclaim.htm

I didn't find anything regarding health insurance coverage, but there's some good info there on how to apply for UI benefits. You might qualify for medicaid or Med-i-Cal benefits.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll see what I can do about getting some answers for ya.

Dave

P.S. I work for EDD in Sacto but not in Unemployment Insurance
