I'm working on getting this motor going. The previous owner said it would idle rough, and fuel was spitting out the sides of the pump(see other thread).

Upon further inspection I have found that the intake manifold and one of the heads have been replaced with newer parts. The newer parts are blue.

The non replaced head has some black soot on it, and I'm wondering if it is heat damage.

Please look the photos over and give your thought.

I also am wondering if there is anything wrong with running with the newer style head on the one side, as it looks much different. I'm not sure if the combustion chambers are the same size. I would think that if the motor ran with more compression on one side it would put uneven pressure on the crank bearings and wear it out.

Please advise.

Thanks for reading!

My guess is that the white head was run with a loose spark plug, blowing smoke and soot out around it. Overheating would have left a different sort of evidence.

The other head is probably from a 60 or 65hp motor. Don't worry about it, it will work fine and won't hurt anything.

I agree with F-R. Overheating would leave blistered paint.

I agree with FR also. It looks like soot and blow by. I get it the odd time when plugs mysteriously loosen...

Well Mr. Johnson - I might just do that. But if this thing tried to run with a new fuel pump, I might as well use it. It's here, and it's paid for.

Thanks for your opinion, I'll let you know what happens!

Ya know about a year ago I picked up this Glassmaster that had a 60 horse V4 that ID'd to be a '67 model. I just wanted the trailer, the boat needed the usual deck/transom core dance. The lower unit was seized up- I took it off as it was just a few bolts- and the flywheel turned. Now this thing had the wiring harness about corroded off of it and varnishy goo in the glass sediment bowl off the carb, had ten year old registration on the boat.

I hooked up a battery I had, jumped across the starter terminals and it spun over. I splashed some weed eater gas down the carb throat and BWAHHHH! that old dog roared to life in a blue smoky haze! I rigged a water hose directly to the tube going to the powerhead, and stuck a gas line to the carb into that jug. That thing sat there and idled down like it was shut off ten minutes ago. I traded the motor and boat with my old trailer to a bud who laid some tile for me just to get it out of my yard.
