My 1991 4.3 Alpha1 currently has raw water cooling. I would like to change to a closed system with a heat exchanger. Any good source on parts and what is involved?

Re: Heat exchanger

Check out boatfix dot com. They have great prices on cool-craft systems. I'm going to be adding FWC systems to my 454's this spring.

Has your boat bee run in salt water much? If it has you probrably don't want to do the conversion. If it's been in fresh water then you'll need to take the thermostat housing off and look inside the block to check the conditionl. If you have flaking rusted metal then you can not convert to a closed loop system. If it's just rusty looking, but not flaking then the block can be acid flushed and amonia rinsed, then you can install the closed loop system.

Jeremy

Re: Heat exchanger

After 30 hours of service its not recommened to install fresh water cooling. The block has started to rust. That rust will end up on the heat exchanger cooling tubes. You should install fresh water cooling when the engine is new.
