170 merc alpha 1. The endcap on my heat exchanger bent out I believe from freeze damage so I flatenned it with a rubber mallet and bolted it and the 2 rubber gaskets back on. Problem is I have a slight leak from it I am afraid to tighten it any more Is there something I am missing?

It is probly still slightly bent. Did you use new gaskets? Check the surface where it bolts to for an imperfection.

Take the cap off and lay it on a flat smooth surface. Take a flashlight and go all around the edge, you will probably see a spot that is just a little high.<br />Tap on it until it sits flat on the surface plate, then try it again. :)

I ran into the same problem. It was much simpler for me to just buy a new end cap and gasket ~ $25. Leaks gone and I'm back to enjoying the boat with no issues.

Re: heat exchanger ?

Get new end caps, if one's leaking (there's not a lot of pressure in the heat exchanger) you might never get it right. Also, if you had a freeze up, check all internals and pressure test closed cooling system side.
