well i broke down and had the lower unit taken off and yes the impeller is shot. yes it was put in last summer brand new but paint stripper and rubber dont go together. i stripped the outdrive down and repainted it over the winter. im guessing some paint stripper got inside the water intake and was sucked up into the pump ans sat there. when it got wet it just fell apart. 3 of the fins are gone and the rest the tips was gone also. now i have to wait for the marine guy who has been helping me to get back from lunch so i can get a new one and get back to fishing.

Aye,

I'll second that. When I replaced the raw pump and housing on my 454 Bravo, all the fins were there although they were a little worn out and the housing was a little cooked from the previous owner running the pump dry "for only a few seconds".

I did take the whole raw water side of the cooling system apart to re-plumb it for the San Juan Engr system and found the remnants of a previous pump failure crammed in the oil cooler......... ........ luckily, those pieces cannot get thru the cooler but all of them were there. Also luckily they did not cause an overheat....

Find all the pieces!

Cheers,

Rick
