Check balls are spring loaded. Simply, they stop cold water leaving via the elbows before it's been in the engine.

Re: Heating up at idle! FINALLY...IT'S FIXED!!!!

Finally......went out this afternoon and stretched the springs on the check balls, put the 140 thermostat back in it, and crossed my fingers! It heated up to about 160, at idle, and stayed there!:D:D:D Guys, I can't thank you enough for all the help. Next time I read a post from someone in my situation I may actually have a good suggestion!

Thanks Again,
Aaron

I did the same thing with my springs and I idled in gear for 15+ mins and the temp stayed dead on 160? I also sanded the seat of the check balls. Gotta love this forum.
