Don't know about dangerous, but my guess is it will harden before you take it out.

Methinks someone was trying to pull a fast one on ya. Also can you imagine if the resin erupted in the microwave? Ya better not try it in mama's or...... ;)

the longer it is on the wood before 'kick-off'/dry,, the better the absorbtion..

the higher the heat,, the faster the kick-off,, the less absorbtion..

To aid in absorbsion prime the wood with resin with very little hardener in it, before recoating with the regular mix, play with it on some scrap first--Bob

Will putting epoxy in the microwave heat it?

I don't think it will as there is no water in epoxy. Water in the food we heat is what the microwaves work on.

BigBad I believe if you put the wood in the microwave it will heat the wood as ther eis almost alway water in wood. This would heat the wood up then when you coat the wood with epoxy you cool and contract it. Maybe this will pull in the epoxy. I personally think it going to not work as who is using wood small enough to fit in a microwave?

Heat the resin with a heat gun or hair dryer before you mix it. I think the microwave would work with care but wouldn't do it that way myself.

Thin the epoxy with 5% or less acetone. If you are really concerned about adhesion use a 36 or 40 grit sanding disk to scuff the surface. Or you can "woodpeck" the surface with a pick...that's what I do.

I am with Bill P here, Heat Gun works like a charm to help turn epoxy into penetrating epoxy. Microwave is for food.

I've used the microwave before. A few years ago I was building a kayak and mixed up a batch of epoxy, only to have something call me away before I was able to apply it. I put the batch in the freezer until the next day (to keep it from kicking), then nuked it before application. Worked great! I was using MAS.

Re: heating up mixed epoxy in microwave

Water is not required for a microwave to work. Microwaves "shake" molecules, forcing them to rub up against each other, causing friction, making heat. Water has a freer (is that a word?) structure and shakes quickly, but wood will shake too, just takes longer and the effect is less.

Most microwaves are vented to outside their frame. Mixed epoxy gives off fumes, and placing it inside of a device in your home (presumably) that will blow those toxic fumes around is Hazardous, please don't do it inside!

Just wet out the wood with unthickened epoxy first, them glass it and you'll be fine.

I have seen people heat epoxy in a micro wave.
It boiled almost instantly, like foam, then flowed out over the top of the container and onto the oven. It did bond well to the oven though.

I don't understand why this would be necessary in any situation except for the person that froze their mix.

In almost every case, you are working quickly to complete your task before the epoxy kicks. Adding heat to it will simply make it kick faster.

If you are really that worried about getting a good saturation, buy one of the specialty epoxy formulations specifically developed for this.

To me the longer is sits in liquid form on the wood, the more it will be absorbed into the wood. Use a slow hardener, saturate the wood and let it sit.
