heavy gear engagement

I have a yamaha 50 hp 2 stroke 80,s era percision blend.
when engaging forward gear it does so but its a heavy crunch........it runs fine after that.
ive recently had the bottom end of to replace the water pump, i marked all the connections so id get it right upon refit.
the engine is new to me so im not sure if this was an exsisting proplem.
iv also drained and replaced the gearbox oil.

any imput would be appreciated

I have a 1986 Pro-50 and it engages with "authority". Make sure the idle speed is in spec and shift firmly into gear.

Don't hesitate or baby the shift.
