Ok- so I have posted on here numerous times this summer about my Bayliner Capri (Volvo Penta aq125 with 270 outdrive)and how it overheats when under a load over 3000rpms, but its fine otherwise. In neutral, its great, I can run it as high/hard as I want and never overheats. So I went out last saturday and lo and behold, no overheating!! the only tinkering I did was I reattached the short rubber bellow that goes from the exhaust manifold to a large pipe. I noticed it spilling water at the rim the previous time out, so I made sure the connection was good. I weigh 205 and I was skiing being my boat, girlfriend was tubing, others were skiing and no overheating for half the day!! Then, all of a sudden, it decided to act like its old self and begin over heating again. DAMN!! Everytime we took it above 3000RPMs the temp slowly crept up. -
Could that bellow tightening behind the exhaust manifold have temporarily fixed the heat problem? that is my question this time...I know that it slipped again and now I have retightened it again- going out today. I don't know, but this only confirms that this annoying problem is something simple and easy to fix, but I can't find it!!!! Any suggestions???? Thank you-

i dont no if your drive uses and exaust shutter or some type of flapper but if the hose is comeing off when it is tightened correctly it sounds like there is something restricting the flow after the hose

if the water cant go out it cant come in

tommays

My guess is an exhaust flapper or impeller part floating around and coming up only when the flow pressure increases.

I have the same problem (see "overheating making me nuts" on sept 7) there are some good ideas there, however none of these have worked as of yet. If you solve the problem please post it. I have seen and talked to guys that don't even use a bellows to the outdrive, they exhaust straight into the water from the engine and they never overheat. I have had this problem since the engine was new. I think it may be a defect in the engine

I guess that it could be an impeller part, as Cobra said, getting lodged and in the waterway. But then why wouldn't it overheat when in neutral also? I mean the flow has got to increase at 5000rpms in neutral and no overheating whatsoever.
Yeah, I have tried almost all the thing on your list STYP, its a real hair puller...especially when it stops overheating for a few hours and starts again!!! thanks though
