I have a 1986 Force 50 HP. I posted a few days ago about it, but I'm still having problems. Here is my previous post...

have a 1986 Force 50 HP that pretty much anything above idle (i can go a little higher but not much) it starts coughing and semms like it's getting worse. It did it once the last time I took it out but then cleared up and was fine the rest of the day, then Friday I took it out and it did this the whole time and seemed to get worse. It doesn't seem to be overheating, fuel filter is clean as a whistle, and it seems to idle pretty well. I think I noticed the idle doing it a little by the end of the day. It's been a very good running motor up until now, and I'm not sure where to look at this point. Has anyone had this happen or know what to do? Thanks.

So, at this point.. I took it out today, and here are some updated findings. It ran perfectly at first, I hit it hard a couple times it was smooth as could be, so I putted around the no wake for say 5 mins and then got out of that area and took it up to WOT and backed off to about 25 mph and cruised a bit (another 10 min or so). Ran great. btw, sometime during this time I backed the mixture screw out 1/4 turn... seemed to not make any difference other than it idled reallly low, but ran good either way I had the screw. Ok, so had it around cruising speed and went through someones wake, and immediately when I started hitting the bumps the engine started doing it's coughing thing. Idon't know how best to explain it other than it's like it runs, and then misses for a second, then catches back on, over and over. After this it got worse and worse to where it would do that at all speeds (even idle). If I would turn it off for 10-15 min it seemed a little better after I'd start it, but only at a low speed, if I gave it much throttle it immediately would start doing it again. Ok, so temp wise, I'm getting good flow out of the tell tale hole. Now, the thermostat housing has 3 screws, two of them are broken off inside and im having a horrible time trying to get them out. There is a little bit of leakage but very minimal, and i'm still getting good flow, because if I wasnt it wouldn't come out of the hole (i tested that). Also, this problem started before the screws broke off. I can touch the engine, but only for about a second or it would hurt... not HOT but certainly wouldnt want to hold it. As far as the water coming out of the tell tale, it's hot, but bearable. I don't think it's the fuel pump because I tried squeezing the bulb a bit while it was going and it seemed pretty tight (and didn't make it run better). I have not yet rebuilt the carburetor but I'm going to get the kit tomorrow from NAPA. I am at a loss here as to what is causing this. I need to have this thing working by Sunday. PLLLLLEEASE help. Any suggestions as to what to do would be really really appreciated. Thank you!!

To add to that... as the problem progresses the misses are longer, harder, and certainly make it hard to get any speed. It's not like a loss of compression so no power, it's the missing that causes it.... if taht makes any sense. haha Thank you!!!

if the plugs are clean it sounds electrical to me,maybe a loose wire or ht lead or coil breaking down.i have a force 50 (1990)but my misfire was head gasket as bottom plug was fouled up with water n oil mixed.good luck.

Re: Helllllppppp PLEEEASE

Might be a bad coil (cdm) that starts to fail after it gets hot.

One of the coils is only like 3 months old, it better not be bad! haha buuut, the good side is, neither was the old coil (long story), so i think i'll take the old one and switch the other old one and it out and see. I never knew (until reading post after post tonight) that a bad coil can work ok till it heats, so I'll definitely check that out today. Thank you both, and if anyone else has any ideas I'd certainly appreciate them. thanks!

Yeah, the battery is new, and has a good charge. I'm thinking pretty strongly it's the coil. I didn't get to test it today, but going to for sure tomorrow. Thank y'all!

Re: Helllllppppp PLEEEASE

The key seems to be hitting someones wake. If its not a loose wire, or a loose battery cable, I would suspect a float hanging in the carb (s). I had mine apart and didn't center the float hinge pin and the float hung in the fully up position ( no gas flow into carb. Also when I pulled the float bowl, I had specks of black which turned out to be pieces of the fuel line.
