I'm new to this forum but not to boating in general. Could use some advice in buying our 2nd boat.

A local dealer has the boat I'm interested in at a decent price (Monterey 214 FS w/5.0L GXI and tandom axle trailer) Here is a link to the identical boat: Monterey 214 FS

1)The boat weighs about #3400, is the 270hp 5.0 fuel injected suff power for this boat?

2) What kind of deals, incentives, etc. are offered at boat shows and should I wait 5 weeks until the local show?

Thanks, don

Re: Hello all...NEED HELP

I'm no pro here on those particular boats, but 270 hp on as boat that size would be more than sufficient for me, and the EFI motor is definitely the way to go as you've chosen.

As for price, I've found that yes, boat shows generally bring out the best deals, especially if you can buy it directly at the show and tow it home from there (saves them some transportation costs.) If they've made you a good deal today, they'll still make good on it 6 weeks from now. If the boat show comes by and the price drops a bit more, all the better.

You have nothing to lose by waiting...unless of course you don't have a boat to drive for the next 5 weeks! Good luck.

Good points...and you hit the nail on the head, 5 weeks without the boat is tough. :(

I've got a 20' bowrider with a 5.0L (220hp) Mercruiser. The boat has a published weight of 3100lbs. I have no complaints about the performance. You may be able to get a better price on the Monterey in 5 weeks since it's closer to the winter months.

I work for a Boat Dealer and we usually get the best deals from our manufacturers for our Boat Shows. Our main manufacturer is Cobalt Boats, they give us anywhere from $1,000 - $5,000 off depending on model. Usually if you buy in the winter you get a better deal because the dealer will be trying to push inventory out the door.

Thanks for the info. Let me ask you then, since the first boat show here is in Oct (6th -9th) would you consider that "winter" as a dealer and be willing to work on the price...OR should I wait for the next boat show which is in JAN.? Do you think there would be much of a difference if so?

Thanks, I can't imagine the fuel injected 270 hp would be underpowered...but heck, I'm trading up from a 3.0L 135 hp  so what do i know!

I believe they will deal more on the 2005 by then (assuming it isn't sold  ) but I don't think they will be at the boat show. I guess I can neg. with them just before the show and put down a deposit, go to the show and see what kind of deals are offered...maybe they can match.

Watered down, get your best deal now .Now put a price on the use of a boat from now until Oct.The way I use a boat it is surely worth a thousand dollars, meaning I would rather have the boat now than save a thousand dollars and wait.If you will only use it a few times during that month ,you may as well wait.I dont think you will be saving more than a thousand or two TOPS.Charlie
