Ayuh....
What you'll find is a reasonably smooth inner piece,+ a reasonably smooth outer cup that are Bonded to each other by the rubber......

Shifting side to side is just as Bad as spinning....

Re: Hello, Coupler ?

Has anyone seen a coupling fail?

I've seen lots of them fail, can be in 2 ways, the rubber breakes loose from either the inner or outer part of the coupler, or the splines wear out.
I have also seen brand new ones that were the splines were not perpendicular to the surface that bolts to the flywheel. You can never get them aligned, even if you did align it in just one direction you would have a serious vibration and the rubber would do a lot of flexing and overheating and would fail quickly. When you get one of those, you have to replace them.
They are assembled similar to a prop hub, but with a lot closer tolerance.
You also can't buy just seperate parts of any coupler.

Re: Hello, Coupler ?

It looks like the factory presses the inner into the rubber and then presses the outer housing onto the rubber. Vibration is what i was worried about looking at this coupler. I'm not going to chance it. But I am going to see if i can pry it back to center just to see if it moves side to side in the outer housing. Maybe I'll dismantle it and have a peek. Thanks guys for the input on this, I'll look for another coupler. Dont mean to be a pain on what seems to be a simple solution to most. Call me Mr. Curious or Curious George maybe. Ha Ha! :D
