Hello Everyone...

Hey Everyone,
I'm new to the site and I hope to enjoy posting here, just not about problems...LOL! I'm familar with posting, I post on the Atlanta falcons web site alot.. Anyway, I just bought a new 40hp tohatsu TLDI. I'm replacing 40hp Mercury, its a 1984 model and I'm not sure what I have got myself into. My boat is 15ft and is rated for a 35, its a 84 model monark and the mercury came on it new. I'm a little worried about these new forty horses, I hope it's not to much motor. My old motor only weighed 156lbs... this new tohatsu weighs about 200lbs??? so they say.. What is everyone's opinion on this, will this motor be a good fit for my boat? Is it too much?? It has power tilt and trim too...I am keeping my old 40 for now, it still runs, just some minor problems with the firing I think. I'm going to fix it and may sell it or put it on another boat. I just got mad with it, the starter quit and I had it rebuilt, the water pump quit and I put a impeller in it, and now these firing problems started and I have been working so much on it, I had to fix the drive on the starter because it stripped out. So I went and brought a new motor...LOL! The old motor runs good in the yard hooked to a flusher and with the top off. If you lay your hand on it, it grounds out and dies, and the metal top has the same effect. It also doesn't crank in the water, so any help with it would be nice too, but mostly just want opinions on the tohatsu I just bought.

If your boat is rated for a 35 why did you buy a 40?

Yes, I think you should be some what worried, for all
kinds of reasons.

I ran the boat today! Enjoyed it! Perfect FIT! You can't even tell a difference in the weight. It will haul butt!!! I love it, great motor, quite, smooth, love the trim and tilt, and loaded with power....

Also, the reason I bought a 40, it had a forty on it and was perfect. I have seen very few boats with motors equal to what they are rated, alot have bigger motors. The old motor ratings were terrible and if you went by them, your boat would be grossly under powered. The New forty horses have a actual 40HP and that was my concern. Also the New ones are a little heavier. If I went with a 30 or 35, I would have had a 4 stroke and they are too heavy for their HP. My boat came new with a 40 hp and I'm glad I stayed with it. No worries, perfect setup! Also, my boat is just like a Pan Fish Special, just a little shorter, well built, and very stable. It is like 15ft and some inches, were a panfish is 16ft, not enough difference to tell, and its a little narrower. It should have been rated for a 40 I think.
