Hi, I purchased a 73 Comoro 17T open bow boat in August. It's a sterndrive with a Mercruiser 140 ( A 4 cylinder Chevy 3.0) . I'm a first time boat owner and have a lot to learn. I'm glad to find this site and other Silverline owners to help. The old girl looks purty good. I did a valve job and carb kit to the engine and I plan to add a pertronics ignition this winter. I'm thinking I will pull the gas tank and check for rust. I will be adding a bimini top soon as well. I've had it in the water 5 times and have been having the time of my life. It will be used as a fishing boat mostly. I need some help understanding props and will be looking over this site to learn about them. I look forward to the experience of boating and getting to know all of you.
Have a nice Day.

Well, it's the cold dark winter up here in MN. I have my boat in the shop but, have not done much to it yet. I removing the breaker points and installing a pertronix ignition with matching coil. Never have to change points again and the hotter spark should make it start better and keep the plugs cleaner. I ordered a Bimini top from here on i boats and have not yet got it installed. The boat used to have one mounted on a sort of slide rail down the inside od the boat and I hope to fabricate the new one to go on in the same way. My floor seems solid with no soft spots but, I think I'm a little too heavy. So next spring I plan to cut some small access holes under the rear seats and reach in to remove as much of the wet foam as I can. If it's even wet. I'll find that out when I get in there. I'm not going to remove the whole floor. It's too much work and as I said every thing is still solid. I have one trim cylinder that is leaking just a little but, have not yet decided if I'm going to fix it our just keep adding oil to the reservoir. I should change my cooling impeller but, have not yet figured out exactly how to find it, or get it apart. I have a friend who insist he is going to go water skiing behind my boat so I found a place that gives out safety lessons once a year only 50 miles from me and I intend to take the course in the spring when they have it. I wish spring would hurry up and get here so I can take the boat out and get used to operating her.

All I can do now is wait for spring.

Re: Hello, new silverline owner/member

hello,

nice silverline u have there. sounds like u have done some good engine work and more planned. i like electronic ignitons. :) if it was mine, i would also change the ignition wires. in fact, i am working on ignition changes on my 1971 85HP evinrude. wires, coil, maybe even a msd 6A... seems to "bolt right in"! :D

i would go with the stock prop for now. ur service manual should state it. mine is a 13 1/4 x 17 i think it is the original prop. and... in pretty good condition, too.

right now, doing heads, plates, gaskets, Tstats impeller etc.

will pull topside down for a looksee once heads back on.

some rusted parts can be tricky... ha, i had to use some ol Model A days tricks...

yup! cut the cut off in two... she came off then... LOL

as an added tip, no doubt ur boat would love a fresh fuel pump, too. i just got one from chevy for my 250 at $45 but i wanted GM. close american made at auto parts... $28. 6 psi over a tired 4 psi is throttle response!!

also plan on a new fuel pump for my outboard. no fuel pressure, no go... weak fuel pressure, weak throttle response...

Re: Hello, new silverline owner/member

I should have added that I am installing new plug wires as well. I have to make them up because I could not find pre made ones but, there a goos set. For the life of me I can't remember the name right now but, there yellow. I am also adding two new wires from the ignition key all the way back. One for the starter solenoid and one keyed to the hot side of the coil. That way I can bypass the factory resistance wire.

You may be right. A new fuel pump might be a good idea for me too. The diaphragm in the old one is probley getting weak after 35 years. After looking at the screen on the; stupidly designed upside down; sediment bowl I'll decide if I need to pull and clean the gas tank too.

I'm not sure which prop to run yet. I've only had the boat in the water a few times and I didn't have it tuned up and running perfectly before winter came.

Is that the original color of your boat? Looks nice in the picture. Got any other pictures? My paint is a little faded in spots on the sides. I'm wondering how to make it look better. Got any ideas?

Have a nice Day ,Caveman Charlie
