Re: hello to all fellow starcraft owners
Had a though guys..if anyone wants to know (seriously) how to improve handling greatly on the outboard, remote steering boats, I thought I would add this. If you have a referb going on now, this is the time to do it, although it can be done at any time.
On 16ft and shorter boats, add a 3" setback made from 5/16" channel alum...on the 17-up, add 5-6" alum channel setback (best if 3/8" material)..doesn't have to be a jackplate, and the material is around 40 bucks.
I had 5-1/2" setback (5/16"-a bit thin) on my 18 in the picture with a 115, and the ease of handling and stability it added in turns impressed me greatly. I hung my 200 on that thin 5/16" material and run 56-57MPH with no problems, but for ease of testing so many different props I had to go to a jackplate and it's multiple pieces of 3/8".
This feature eliminated any porpoise problems, and increased the effectiveness of the trim.
The only item of concern is the length of the steering cable, which will work unless it is stretched to the limit as is.
I've done this on 3 boats now, all starcraft-2 18's and 1 17 with an 85...positive results on all 3.
Just something you might want to look into that I have found to improve handling.
