I posted on this problem some time back. I have a 1977 Mercury Model 200 20Hp motor that will drop into gear if the engine is reaved up while in neutral. I had a great response to why this was doing this and a solution that worked for a limited time as was stated - that was that the detents on the manual shift were worn and that I could bend down the piece that sat into the detents to put more presure on them so it would not drop into gear as easily. Bending this part down fixed the problem for about 5 years, but the detents have worn further and it is tiem for me to replace that part. The question that I have is what are the names of parts I will need and how hard is it to replace this? The serail number on my motor is 4409643if this will help any. Thanks in advance to anyone that is willing to help me.
belowt@mail.ecu.edu

Looked up the parts(64122 BRACKET, MOUNTING - SHIFT SHAFT) and the parts that I need are no longer available. I have done a search on Iboats and even google the reference and nobody seems to have them. Any suggestions on where I can find these parts?

You might ask at Johns old mercury web site.
There is a great forum and lots of links.

I posted this on John's site also:

I just bought a part from a guy who is parting out a Merc 200 on eBay, serial number 4411799. He seems willing to work with someone who needs something, at least list the part for you and give you a chance to buy it on eBay. You can find his listings here:
http://motors.search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZrhvacr

One other thing--I think my shifter was very close to slipping into gear from neutral also, and I was able to adjust the location of the detent spring to make the difference more positive. I imagine you have already tried this, but I just thought I should mention it.

I hope this post doesn't violate the rules here--I'm not selling any parts myself.
