Here's our camping trip. I'm cautiously optimistic. Shortening the trip, launching from mallets bay instead of shelburne bay.

He said they did a compression test & a compression test w/ oil & that the pressure came up slightly & he thinks that it's still rings, a scored piston wall... I'm hoping he's wrong, & it's valves or head gasket...

i'm no mech by any means. but i still think if ya do the air leak test it will help find, prior to tear down, where the problem is at. at least give you a clue anwyways. i'm also under the impression that you can discover a scored cyl. wall with this test too. ya apply yer air and run the piston down the bore to discover a scratch down low in the bore......why didn't yer mech do that test? heck maybe yer mech has a real leakdown tester too. bet ya could realy get down to some diagnoisin with proper tools. the air leak test aint that hard to do. did ya read the bottom of the 2nd page of the link i posted.......be suspisious of anything i have to say as i'm no mechanic....but it's all about tryin to help ea. other out on this fourm.... so i make my comment.......have fun on yer trip.........:)

Does the mechanic own his own shop or is he working for someone else? If the mechanic is the boyfriend of a good friend of yours, maybe you can get him to do it as a side job away from the shop for cheaper?

Either way, your engine will get worse and worse and eventually won't go on a plane.. and it will get terrible gas mileage. Pull the head, you'll know what you have. Could be a cracked valve or blown gasket.
