At least a blown headgasket....Maybe a blown engine.

You have to determine where the water, that's leaking around the spark plug, is getting into the engine. Headgasket, cracked block, etc.

so the first step would be replace the gasket and then go from there ?

Your first step is to pull the cylinder head to see if the headgasket is blown. Regardless of whether is is or not you will have to replace it at that point. But, while the head is off you examine the block for a crack.

ok thanks for your help. I got the engine cheap so I will give it a go (removing the block) I cant break it any worse.

remove the plate on back of the motor (water jacket ) not cylinder head - the jacket plate maybe warped so you might be looking for a good used one or a new part - the gasket is leaking - not uncommon -just get ready to snap some bolt heads if theres alot of corrosion there .

I read that some will put a bead of sealant on the jacket around the plugs....If its not too bad of a leak.My water jacket leaks also. Not bad,but I keep an eye on it.Its been this way for two seasons, and it hasn't gotten worse, but I think ill get a new gasket on her after this season.

That sound better than a head gasket job for sure. I will pull the gas tank and take a look. Thanks for the info.

did you pull that plug out and look at it? I had water leaking around my #1 also and when I pulled the plug, there was corrosion on the plug that looked identical to the corrosion in the water pump area. This I am assuming is getting in either by the exhaust cover/baffle gasket or through the crank seals. Not sure yet. Check that and see what you got. If the plug looks good and oily, it is likely that the water jacket is just slightly warped. If that is the case you can just pull that cover and replace the gasket but use some rtv around the plug sealing surface.
