i have a 1987 force 85 hp. it hasnt idled very well at all. it would start good run a min. then stall. it would run better without the engine cover in place like it was starving for air. now it is getting worse. i was out yesterday and at first it was giving me trouble idiling at all i would get it going and it would run great at wot. then it started to bog down every once in a while. expesially under a load like 2 ppl in the back of the boat they would have to move up front. i notice that when it did this gas was shooting out of the bottom carb. and the gas was getting sucked into the intake. now on open throttle is the only way to keep it running but it only will rev alittle. what do you guys think what do i need to do and do these 2 problems have something to do with eachother or do i have 2 totally different problems.

First you need to clean your fuel system and adjust your carbs. Get a Clymer manual and it will show you how.

If it runs better with the cowl off, check the rubber bellows on the back side of the engine. If it is misaligned or damaged, it will allow exhaust gas to get to the carb intakes.

thanks i will try that. i am also going to rebulid the carbs. the kits are inexpensive so i will get that out of the way. do you think the other problem is related. like is the gas getting into the intake going to cause the bogging.

If you are already going to be rebuilding the carbs, I would suggest doing the fuel pump as well. Costs about $14 and takes about 15 minutes.

And if you get the carb kit with the jets and everything, I would still recommend only doing the stuff you feel completely comfortable doing and not replacing everything, just because you have the parts. I made that mistake once.

hey guys i have the same problem with my 35 hp force.itll start, though its hard to get started, itll run rough, cough and then die.it has new gas properly mixed 50 to 1,new plugs, the carb has been cleaned, though it did have gum in the bowl.this is my first outboard engine so im kind the dummy here.this engine is nearly new condition though its been in storage for 10 years. what might the problem be? aside from the fact that i cant find the distributor cap anywhere lol. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If it has sat for 10 years, it really should be gone over completely before using it or you may get stuck somewhere. At a minimum you need to rebuild the carbs, replace the fuel pump diaphram, replace the plugs, replace the water pump, and replace the lower gear oil. After you have completed those tasks, start at new thread if you are still having problems.

Check the reeds while you got the carbs off.A broken reed will cause the fuel to spit back out of a carb.
