hi all i am gonna leave a long post tha wil show you my boating ignorence. I will cut to the chase so you don't have to read it all if you do not wish to. I am looking at a 1980's 20ft Samrock cutty for 3000.00. It has a shaft with packing and a rudder with packing. the guy who ownes it said it will "drip" and that is normal.

I have been an automotive tech and industrial tech and do not have a problem with packing although i have always sealed oil in and water out and i am sure the oil on one side helps greatly. is the shaft and prop ancient technology or normal for some boats? Im sure ships and large boats use this method but with packing? I like the boat it is a 302 engine with a carb and points (woo-hoo) and yes i am old enough to know what carburation and point ignition is. and 20 miles off shore i could make it run to get home witha a rubberband, some string and a gum wrapper instead of looking at my ignition module and wondering.

any insight on this rudder and packing stuff i would love to hear. and comments on a shamrock boat i would love to hear.

Can i leave it in the water without dripping and sinking if the pump dies, i Assume (we all know what it stands for) that in the water the packing would swell and become seal tite and stop dripping.

Ohhh what a can of worms i feel i have opened and truly thank all for their input and replies.
